The place to speak about Dev's current projects, and everything yet to come

I think what Devin is doing when he does those "melodic screams" is singing in falsetto/head voice and adding a lot of grit to the sound, but not so much that it turns into an atonal scream. I can kind of approximate the sound he gets by making raspy falsetto shrieks/wails/etc (obviously it's nowhere near as good, but I think I'm doing the same thing he does).

I think he saw a cat lady yelling at traffic and thought "...that has potential."

After a couple of years of practicing that style, I think I've got it. It works pretty much like any grit you put on a rock-voice, but you pitch it up like a motherbeeper towards a falsetto.

It features prominently throughout the song, but gets forefront-treatment at 0:56 and 2:25. I've been told it gets pretty close to that of the D-Mayn. (Yes, as you can see, I managed to shamelessly plug one of my songs in my second post here. Sorry about that!)

The only other person I've ever heard pull off those kind of vocals is the singer of Benea Reach.

This sounds fantastic! Your voice does indeed come pretty close to Devin's "scream-singing" -- nicely done! (the rest of your vocals are excellent as well)

Ooh, thanks man! I was kinda worried that linking to my own shit with a second post would seem a little blatant. You're not too bad yourself. I've actually had SCTFtPTF in a rotation for a number of years (from a time when I posted here more, and under a different name).

Anyway, guess who also does that style very well. Chester Bennington of Linkin Park fame! From what I can hear, it's the same technique, although he rarely goes as high pitch-wise.

Hey thanks for all the reply's friends!
I just want to clarify, I am not trying to copy Dev's voice, but rather learn the technique he uses to achieve this hybrid sound.
After reading through the thread posts someone mentioned using head voice.. The whole time I had been using sort of half head half normal voice but after I switched to using full head voice I had a major breakthrough as far as extending my range, having better control, and not hurting my throat when achieving the "scream singing" sound. I'm in the midst of writing my first solo album away from my bands so maybe in a few weeks when I have some demo's I will post some clips utilizing the new technique.

Thanks again!

Wow, that's an old one... didn't think anyone here would remember that. Glad you dig it, though I've done a lot more (and improved a lot) since then.

Please do! I'm always curious as to how people achieve various styles of harsh vocals, even if I've mostly given up on it myself. I just don't have the timbre to make it sound good with my voice, I think. :)

Mike Patton has also this very specific way to throw high pitched, almost surrealistic screaming vocals at your face. Whereas it's him or Devin, I can't believe sometimes that I listening to an actual human voice.
Fantomas' albums are very special for this. It worths a try!
