Um, maybe the question can be answered this way:
What is the music being made FOR? If the music is made for an audience, then we might assume that the music will be made to cater to that audience, therefore will have elements of familiarity so that the audience will like it or whatever. However, if the music is made for its own sake, maybe then it CAN be made without influence. Not to say that it won't be influenced by what experiences the creator had gone through, but without an intended audience, maybe the creation will stand on its own, as it was made without regard to "fitting" into some idea of what it should be.
I dunno, I'm just rambling. I don't have the background to get into the specifics like some of the others here that have posted.

Yours is pretty much the best and non-questionable point of view: if you want to gather an audience, you gotta have familiarity.
