Ok so I do condiser myself a big metalhead. My favorite bands are Judas Priest, Megadeth, SYL/DT, Testament, Metallica, Sepultura, Xentrix, etc, etc.

But...

I have never listened to any Opeth. I know they are a highly regarded band and are regarded as one of the foremost 'Metal' bands around, but I have never actually got around to listening to them.

So...I want you lot to recommend one or two of their albums for me to buy.

One thing I will mention, I so far have not heard good things about 'Ghost Reveries'. If this is an album I should listen to then say so. If it is an album I should avoid, likewise say so.

I apologise for letting the side down

Oh yeah I forgot to mention. I will only buy albums that have the majority of recommendations. I generally regard most people on these forums as having an advanced taste in music and know what they are talking about. So indeed, only highly recommended albums will be purchased :D

Ghost Reveries is an exceptional album. It's one of my favorites by Opeth. Their newest release, Watershed, is also pretty good. And then there's Blackwater Park, which is another awesome album. Those are my favorite 3 Opeth albums at the moment. They're all worth getting. You will not be disappointed.

Watershed, Blackwater Park, My Arms Your Hearse

Those are my 3 favorite Opeth albums. Probably the best display of what Opeth is.

I'd have to say that Blackwater Park is probably the entry best album, if you want a good mix of what the band is like.

I am just now listening to Damnation, and it really spears through my girly heart and soul!
I just LOVE this album!

For me, Opeth is kinda like Dev.
Depends on the mood what feels the best.
But still, Ghost Reveries could be a good album to begin with.
Then you can deepen your relationship and go with the other albums as well

I think Blackwater Park is sort of regarded as their 'magnum opus', recorded with what is considered to be their 'classic line-up'.

Its all good though!

Still Life was my introduction to Opeth, and for me it couldn't have been a better way to discover them.
Ghost Reveries is probably their best, and is equally recommended as an introduction although you won't get as much of a "classic Opeth" feel.
Damnation is my favourite, but save this one till later.

It can be argued which is the best, but I'd say this is definitely the most appropriate entry album. It has their most well-known song, The Drapery Falls, as well as my personal favourite, The Leper Affinity.

And my favoUrite, Bleak.
