Tetris fucking rocked. But so have a lot of other things...

More complex, three-dimensional things...

I'm waiting for 4D gaming.

Everything after Pong is basically rubbish.

Finished Crysis Warhead. Despite being worse that Pong, it's still massive amount of fun - love the pacing, production values (of course), corny Hollywood style protagonist and just blowing shit up in many entertaining ways. Also can't get enough of physics of destruction there. Seriously, I don't get people saying it's "merely a tech demo". Crysis is like a big playground with guns, TNT and win.

And Far Cry 2 feels kinda boring. I can't be arsed to drive for ages, shot people, drive another ages then go back and shot the same people I killed, because they respawned magically just after I left the sight. Meh.

I still want to get Warhead, I loved Crysis.

Also good news for Xbox and PS3 owners, The Witcher is coming to consoles! Late next year, I cant wait! I could just get it for PC, but this edition is supposed to have a few upgrades from even the "enhanced" edition.

Feh -- unless you have a holographic projector you only have 2D gaming still. Unless you toss in time, in which case you have your three dimensions. Ya see, most "arguments" arise from sloppy definitions, and most "arguments" can be won by crafting precise definitions that make your case.

Also Snood is a cool game. It has simple rules I can comprehend.

Man I hate the whole "games were better in the days of 2D" argument.

I guess it's all down to personal taste, but I don't think people appreciate what they have nowadays. GTA IV's multiplayer experience, for example, is absolutely amazing, and it would have been completely impossible to create anything like that back in the days of 2D. We're now able to make the kinds of games that we could only dream of, even 10 years ago.

On the other hand, game publishers are a lot more risk averse now, because development budgets are so high, so we don't see the same level of experimentation that we had in the days when a lone programmer could make a best selling game from their bedroom.

Erghh "multiplayer experience" sounds far too much like business speak for my liking, enabling user paradigm shifts going forward...

Snood is almost meditative if you play it long enough. Sadly I don't have it on my laptop at present. Or maybe that's good.

Well, technically, holographic projection is totally doable right now, and has been done before. But it's not really a commercializable thing at the moment. Regardless, I wasn't trying to assert that the games actually are 3D or 4D (or nD). So, I suppose from now on I'll say, "I'm waiting for a two-dimensional simulation of four spatial dimensions in games (which, by the way, exists in "simple" online maze games)."

I wasn't even aware that there was any "argument" being made in the first place. Please forgive my use of definitions that didn't have the full mathematical rigidity and rigor of collegiate snobbery on a video game thread.

Perhaps a philosophy/theory thread is in order.

3D gaming rule. Personally, I think first person gaming is ultimate thing at the moment, developers tried to do such thing since ancient times of WayOut on Atari - 2D games existed only because making proper 3D graphics was impossible, didn't they. And I think that all 3rd person perspective games like tomb raider and derivatives exist mainly because people used to see controlled character from the outside. In other words, moar proper FPS games goddamit, we're in 21st century!

There's one sector in gaming, where things undeniably got really dumbed down. It's flight sims (and simulations in general) - in 90s there was plenty of such games released, really fancy stuff with complex missions and brick-sized manuals "how to take off with your fully loaded F117". Companies like Microprose, Dynamix, EA or Origin were releasing TONS of cool ones. Now you have ages old Il2-Sturmovik and Ms Flight Simulator. Rest of "simulations" shelf in store is filled with Sims and some crappy shooters like Blazing Angels. It's kinda sad.

Just got Guitar Hero world tour, went splits on the band pack with my housemate. Starting with bass first. Hooray for songs with trickier basslines.

Never thought I'd appreciate a Korn song that much.

And yea, Atari...Korn songs tend to have decent bass lines, the guitar parts are also kind of interesting...Jon Davis's whiny deliverance of "lyrics" is what kills it
