I wish my friend hadn't just dropped out of college and gone back home.

Well I hope one of mine doesn't either, he is studying Astrophysics...so I doubt it because he fucking loves that topic.

That's quite a coincidence: it's my field of study as well. One of my roommates was studying psychology, but some things went a bit sour in his life, so he's heading home for a bit. I'm just not entirely sure that he'll be back...

Random thought:

What are peoples oppinions on 'Cradle of Filth' on here?

They were recently confirmed for Bloodstock Open Air, and im actually quite looking forward to seeing them.

I had a little phase of liking them a while back, but stopped listening to them much, but when i did play the occasional song it always re-hit a little spot

Thing is, they're a band that, although are rather big around the world, still have a lot of non-respect among the metal world. I can see why, but if you ignore the little things like that, they are a really good band. Dani's vocals are really unique, i've never heard anybody else pull off the howls/screeches that he does... and i think they work really well and add a real eerie dimension to the music.

I know there are a lot of non-metal listeners here, but there are also many who do listen to a lot of Death/Black metal like me, so i just wanted to find out some oppinions...

It's definitely amazing, the things he's told me about that he's studying are so interesting.

That's pretty crazy, entropy!

They are un-respected because they are pretentious, Dani's vocals are typically pretty horrid sounding, their music lacks originality compared to some black/death metal bands.

Not to mention his vocals are typically digitally re-worked. Multi-layered and distorted. They've had their share of good drummers and keyboardists though.

Can't see why this has to be a bad thing. Obviously there's no way he could sing live the same way but if it works on the record and sounds good? Go for it.

I don't listen to Cradle of filth and have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about :D

Edit: A random thought:
Having your friends hate the music you adore is as eye-opening as that thing they used in clockwork orange.

Almost all of my friends hate the music I like. I have a few who genuinely agree with me, and we trade off band recommendations all the time. But for the most part almost all of my friends dont like what I do.

True dat. Hmmm... so that's the reason I haven't wanted to hang out with anyone in a long ass time *ponders*
Seems like the metal genre kind of comes with a stigma attached. And prog. metal? Fo'getaboutit. Might as well just walk around with 'nerd' written on your forehead.

haha

Ive got a younger bro, he's 10 years old... Im usually stressed out / feeling crap and often he "gets in the way" so im generally not nice to him, but since this whole bullshit breakup thing ive been going through, ive been appreciating the people i have around me a bit more.

Anyway, i've been playing on COD4 on Xbox live with him quite a bit, taking in turns... chatting. I even got onto the topic of careers, and got a uni prospectus out showing him all the different courses... haha, cus he was interested.

But anyway, today it was on the subject of music.

His music taste is very odd. In fact, he doesn't have one, he just likes or doesn't like songs/bands.

But he didn't understand Prog music at all. I was playing Planet X quite a bit, and he thought it sounded like random crap. Kinda funny...

He likes Nightwish the most (out of the little he's heard)...

He doesn't like "roary" vocals as he calls them... he thinks they sound like people pretending to be Gorillas on stage.
But he likes Turisas... hypocrit

But yeah, he's young, its understandable that the only music he'll like is catchy simple melodic stuff... hopefully one day he'll appreciate a bit of Nile here and there... throw in some 'Shuggah and air drum along with the polyrhymthic sensations... lol, who knows?

Im hoping to guide him into an Open minded, but mainly metal, fan... with a love/respect for orchestral/ambient etc. also

I kinda know what you mean. On my fashion course I am the only person who listens to metal. Everyone is into poppy dancey stuff, which although I dont mind, they just happen to like the dancey stuff I hate. Which is a little bit of a bummer. (If I hear Lady fucking GaGa one more time I will be forced to kill. :P )

Since I like so many different types of music (and been around so long listening to it),I can kinda switch gears depending who I'm with without bullshiting about interest. When it comes to metal, 'specially what we dig 'round here, though, vertually none of my friends the same age relate. There is still a big age stigma attached to metal intrest. I've gleefully defended loving metal 'at my age' many times
