Macs are about accessibility. It's the computer for those that don't want to spend too much time learning how to use a computer.

Gonna be buying myself a nice new computer within the next couple of weeks...

I don't want to end up buying it, realise Vista is a bit sucky, and then see Windows 7 come out not long after.
Though i supppose i could always just download it when it comes out...

Windows 7 is going to be much better than Vista, definitely worth the wait. Rumour has it it'll be released in October. Release candidate is out today, so you can try it for free.

You can't buy a computer with XP anymore (only for netbooks). But I've read somewhere, that if you buy a PC with Vista on it (OEM), you can upgrade to 7 for free when it comes out. Not sure how that works in detail, but worth investigating I'd say.


But yeah, Linux Sad thing however is that (at least where I live) you can't buy a computer without Windows pre-installed, so you're paying for it anyway even if you'll never use it.

Oh I know. But that's the thing, I love learning about this kind of thing! If Mac lowered their prices they would dominate the computer market without a doubt.

I would get a mac, but i dont want a Macbook, Mac Mini or iMac, and i can't afford a Mac Pro.

The computer i want is about £800, and its:

Vista 64-bit
2.66Ghz i7-920 Processor
8GB RAM
640GB Hard Drive
512mb ATI Radeon HD 4670 Graphics Card
(no soundcard cus i'll be getting an Mbox)

so its not bad, it'll do everything i want it to by far, and more if i ever need it to.

Biert: I was wondering if you could (upgrade for free)... it makes sense really, and if so, then ive got nothing bothering me at all really. I just new Vista is meant to have quite a few gaynesses. I'll have a little read...

I hate macs. The only good thing about them is they take up less space, look pretty, and have the programmes i want on them.

But other wise, i find them horrid. I crashed 4 in an hour.

Although, id take a mac over Vista any day.

50 dollars doesn't sound too bad if it helps to get rid of all the "YOUR COMPUTER IS NOT SAFE" pop-ups just because I turned UAC off.

I suppose we'll wait a bit till they iron out some annoyances (XP wasn't that great at the beginning). And yup, macs would be cooler if I could get one closer to the price of my assembled cheap-o-tec PC and be able to stuck some mahoosive gfx card in it. Mahoosive gfx cards are spiffy.

Windows 7 is not much more than a (big) service pack for Vista to be honest. Basically, XP used NT kernel 5, Vista used NT kernel 6, and Windows 7 is 6.1. It barely has new features, but loads of tweaks and optimizations. One of them being less "Are you sure?" windows. It's also supposed to run better on less powerful systems (among which, netbooks, although with a maximum of 3 applications running at the same time).

One of the major problems with Vista was the lack of drivers. Luckily Win7 will uses the same driver model so that shouldn't be a problem this time. But still it's good to see that Microsoft made something to annoy the not-so-savvy user, they redid the interface

If you have a Windows Live account (MSN/Hotmail) you can download the release candidate for free from http://download.microsoft.com/ (although that version probably won't work after the final is released in October).
2GB should be fine, it's the minimum required for the 64bit version, 32bit only needs 1GB (although I managed to install on a 512MB virtual machine just fine).

But seriously I would take mac for recording purposes only really...or a Mac Book Pro because they are pretty bad ass...

That's what people who have windows say. Macs are extremely useful for any kind of purposes. And Macs aren't constantly updating themselves to the point of annoyance. Sure, there are always upgrades for Macs, but it's much less intrusive.
Best of all, Mac users never have to worry about spyware, adware, viruses, trojans, or other malware. I had never even heard of those things, save for viruses, until well into my years of using a computer.


The only thing you have to worry about with a Mac is, which one are you going to buy?

Lack of choice = lack of freedom
Lack of updates = lack of security

And there most certainly is malware for Mac. When iWorks got updated to 09, there was a warez version downloaded by millions of people that was stacked with malware.
Mac users just don't have firewalls or virus scanners telling them they have the stuff. Most malware doesn't attack and break the computer it's installed on, because it would kill itself. It uses the internet connection to multiply, and when time is ready attack major servers in order to break them. Or collect your personal data, and sends them out.


Macs are useful for any kind of purpose... Paper weight, door stop, foot stool, coaster for your drink...
