Swords are typically cooler than guns, especially the ceremonial ones.

Don't worry, I can't contest you on that one because I've never fired one. I had also never seen a real one until I went to Paris a couple of weeks ago and the police all had them. Scared me shitless. Ask Leechy, we actually had to cross the road. :S

Well considering a lot of people use shooting as a sport, as in shooting targets and such. Shooting a gun is quite a rush. And I can understand the fear if you've never seen one before.

Apparently Maynard shoots paintballs at people who sneak onto his vineyard? And he can frequently be seen in photos with AK's

Swords seem a little more honest. Anyone can pull a trigger and (try) to hit something (doesn't always work out that well); but it takes more skill and balls to work a sword. I'm not condoning violence, but if you're going to hurt or kill someone, you should have to look them in the eyes first.

Does that sound sadistic? I hope you all know what I'm getting at.

A light saber would be awesome. Especially the double-sided one.

I've seen those WTF blanket ads on TV - it's more than a little weird. The people in those ads are pretty cheesy - infomercial actors portray their lives as being unbearable and unlivable until they get the product. Then it's all smiles and the soft focus effect.

Yes, but do you bludgeon someone with one?

To get this back on the WTF-track, rather than awesome-weaponry-track, I have this:

Today, I was proposed to by a homeless man.

Today, I proposed to someone, but she thought I was homeless.

It's pretty half-assed pro-gun argument really :).

I can see point in pro-gun ownership in US, society is probably saturated with guns so much that people need guns to defend themselves against their fellow citizens - looks pretty mandatory (and I don't think any attempt in taking guns from people would end good). On the other hand, I'm glad owning a gun is bit problematic in my country (of course, it's not forbidden, it's just procedures of gaining permission to have a piece are bit of pain in the ass) - gun crime is limited mainly for organized crime groups, where mafia blokes are punching holes in other mafia blokes. I'm glad that most pissed-off, frustrated Poles are far from firearms and have to resort to stabbing others, beating them with sticks or posting angry messages on the internets which makes fatality rate lower, I think.

I've fired a few guns because a friend of mine is a member of a shooting club (indoor target practice, don't worry :P ) and he's allowed to bring someone along to a shooting session. I have to say, the first time I pulled the trigger I was really fucking afraid of it. So much power in my hands, whoa. That being said I strongly believe that such powerful weapons shouldn't be readily available to anyone, which is why I quite like all the rules and regulations and required licenses and whatnot that are in effect here. I guess you can't ban guns entirely but for fuck's sake don't just sell them to any idiot who manages to open a door to a gunstore.

PS. By the end of that shooting session I wasn't afraid anymore, but more awed by these handcannons. I understand the meaning of the phrase "I AM BECOME DEATH INCARNATE!!" a lot better now. ;)

"Now I am become Death, destroyer of worlds." It was what Robert Oppenheimer said, quoting Bhagavad Gita when his team first tested the atomic bomb. Be it a bomb or a handgun, taking life IS a powerful thing. I'm glad you are in awe of that, swervedriver. So many people seem to be blasè about it. My profession has taught me to be very pragmatic and considered about it, though some of my brethern seem to think it would be "fun". I hope I never have to find out exactly what it means.

It is, yes, and anyone who takes my "pro-gun argument" for anything more than what I said is taking me out of context...again.

The US is far from "saturated" with guns. Most government officials here are trying to put much stronger regulations on guns and outright ban them.

And for skrimp's very vague hit at my comment, you are wrong my friend. The very last thing I would ever want to do is take someone else's life(unless they threatened mine...) I am so against using a gun to go on a rampage or just outright kill someone for no reason. Every time I see on the news "couple gunned down" or "school shooting" I get extremely disappointed and frustrated with the abuse of such power that people seem to have no problem with.

I think that's as strange as when a homeless man hugged me and said "You look like you'll be my angel."

That was weird. :D

In his defence though, I DID have 7 foot wings on.. (it was photoshoot stuff...)

I love most of the homeless people here in Cork. There are a few I'll stop and talk to for ages, they're so interesting. They have so much to say and nobody to listen to it. They don't worry about bills or tax or their houses, they just want to get through each day and learn new things and find food and occasionally bathe. They make a fucking tidy profit too, if they're any way likeable! The group I know have an X-Box and shitloads of games back at their homeless shelter. I can't even afford one of those... One guy told me he sometimes makes around two hundred quid a day! For sitting on the street with a fucking hat! I was considering a career move after he told me that.

AlucardXIX wrote:The very last thing I would ever want to do is take someone else's life(unless they threatened mine...)

Yeah; and for a factor like that, you have a medium like "the Winston Scale of the Legitimacy of Threats" to determine your basis for murdering someone. :| Too many frightened, stupid people are afforded access to these powerful killing machines every year. I don't care if you enjoy target practice, do that with pretend weapons. I certainly don't care if you want to kill animals, do that in close range combat like a fucking MAAAAAAN. I maintain that guns should not exist for the reason that their fundamental purpose is to kill things. "You can kill things with knives and sticks and blahblahblah" I DON'T CARE. You can't use a gun in your kitchen like you can a knife and other implements like sticks haven't been created for the sole purpose of doing harm to another entity.

When you consider a situation like America where (statistically speaking) guns seem to be ten a penny, you have to wonder if people who say they "Would never murder, unless their life was threatened" can really be trusted in terms of judgement. On a zebra crossing the other day some impatient git beeped at me and revved his engine as if he was going to plough me down, should I have shot him so that he wouldn't drive over me? :? I know it's a far-fetched example but if guns are readily available, then people of a nervous disposition could probably be held accountable for senseless murders all over the world because of the "my life was threatened" mentality.

But of course, as BrunoN says, in America it's gotten to the point where you need guns to protect yourself from all the other nutjobs with guns. What a nifty system. If by nifty I mean retarded.
