IMPORTANT! PORCUPINE TREE FANS PLEASE READ!

I have sinned. I am still yet to "get into" PT so to speak. I have a feeling that they/Steve are/is kinda like what Dev might be to newcomers; You're just left confused and thinking "So... what the hell (genre) is he?!"

I've been on their myspace numerous times and come away never fully sure of, them.

But anyway, I went on again recently, listened through the stuff, and then the last one - "Half Light" - WOW, I LOVED IT.

I love Opeth, and Dev (obviously), so I'm sure I could easily fall in love with PT.

To my knowledge, Half Light isn't actually part of the Deadwing album, only the DVD-A thingy (which I can't seem to find anywhere easily)... So I was wondering, is the whole of the Deadwing album of a similar, mellow nature? (No deeper spoilers please) - Or is it somewhat of a Ki? (Mix of mellow and other varieties). And what about other albums? Is Deadwing somewhat of a "Damnation" in the Opeth world? - Or does it follow suit in the PT discography?

What is YOUR favourite album? What is the general favourite of the general fans? Which album would you recommend ME starting with? (Bearing in mind I particularly loved the Half Light track)

Cheers guys and gals

I'd say Deadwing is probably their "heaviest" album, not that they really have any. I can't pick a favourite album, but my favourites are Deadwing, FoaBP, In Absentia and Signify. I've never heard of Half Light before D: I'd say start with In Absentia or Deadwing. Especially Trains. Trains. TRAINS.

Hey Aden, *waves*
Half-Light was also on Lazarus (which might have been an EP or a single in addition Deadwing, I actually don't know) and it's on the Deadwing Vinyl, which mah brother owns. The record is transparent blue - because that's so very suiting of the album art [/sarcastic]

If you can get your hands on the Lazarus EP/single/thing, I recommend it - the track So-Called friend rocks the fuck out in 7/4.

The heavy stuff rules, Deadwing, FoaBP. In terms of lyrical content and themes, not in terms of the sound of a song/CD... In Abstentia, Signify, Stupid Dream are very dark. The messages are darker than the sound of the songs. However, FoaBP falls into both categories IMO. My personal favorite to recommend is In Absentia, because it's a good mix of their various sounds. There's some more ethereal songs, some beautiful songs, some darker songs (i.e. Strip the Soul - holy shit, that's my jam) and lyrically, The Creator Has a Mastertape; and there's some songs that impart social commentary such as The Sound of Muzak.

Some people don't like Steven Wilson's voice, not growly enough - some people don't like the music, too 'proggy '- some people think they're too similar to other bands... just ignore that and take it for what it is - no strings attached - a really good band.

Are Opeth, Dev, Porcupine Tree and a few other vaguely obscure metal bands the only things the majority of forum-goers listen to?

Not everyone goes out of their way to listen to obscure music for the sake of it being obscure, fuck off :)

I'm not saying that they do, any sensible person knows that listening to obscure music impresses nobody important. Similarly, listening to one genre exclusively displays an ignorance of the prowess of other genres. I don't think that anyone can be a good musician without exploring several genres in order to attain some perception on music. I exclusively liked metal when I was fifteen because I thought it was cool. Now I find that it's irrelevant what's cool; what matters is finding music that I enjoy. The likelihood of all that being guitar and drum in varying degrees of heaviness is very slim for me. Maybe it's a weird phenomenon on this board. Or maybe it's just uncouthness. :P

Happy birthday, Deth! Haven't seen you around in a while. :(

Metal is like my "fall back on" genre. If I dont know what to listen to, metal is usually the solution.

That being said, I've been really into bands like Thrice and Minus the Bear lately. Much more mellow stuff, though Thrice has their share of heavy tunes.

I've also gotten into some older rap, but only a little.

Country is one genre I just cant handle, unless it's bluegrass and in small does(those guys can fucking PLAY)

As for the PT talk, Stupid Dream is very mellow, you'd probably dig that if you like Half-Light. In Absentia is the best place to start though.

I listen to a lot of funk, some bluegrass (And blackgrass), country music, as long as there is a banjo and a wash-board, some electronic of some desctription music... But I agree, rock and metal are my fall back genre.
