Ok, we get it, you have impeccable taste in everything.

What should we all be playing then according to you, hm?

edit add:
During my 2 sick days at home I've played through Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards as well as its sequel 'Looking for love in all the wrong places'. Fun stuff. Will start LSL3 'Passionate Patty in pursuit of the pulsating pectorals' tonight. :D

Games which don't reek with the same shit I saw 10 years ago in Goldeneye.

So far I've only see you bash anything and everything discussed in this thread, apart from World Of Goo and No More Heroes (and ironically your eager anticipation of NMH 2, whereas you previously bashed developers for milking cash cows by releasing sequels, heh). Surely there are some more titles on your awesome list?

I'm not trying to be ass here, I'm genuinely interested in whatever grand obscure games may be out there that all of us missed but would be a lot of fun to play.

My knowledge of modern games is very limited, even for the ones that get a lot of exposure. I stopped following them all many years ago when my computer couldn't run the latest stuff anymore and I couldn't be bothered buying upgrades all the time. So what I'm usually raving about are old games and older games. I regularly play Civilization II, along with a wad of old DOS games (Fantasy Pinball, Indianapolis 500, Transport Tycoon Deluxe, to name a few).

I also didn't buy a console until GTA 4 came out and even since then my game catalogue for that doesn't expand beyond GTA 4, Forza 2, Halo 3 & Viva Pinata (the last 3 came with the 360, the last 2 I rarely/never played). Games I bought for it are Fallout 3 and Flatout: Ultimate Carnage. Since I think console games are seriously overpriced I am very careful on which I spend my money so I like to gather a lot of opinions before making a decision.

On a side note, what may be chewed out to you might still be new to others. You mention Goldeneye: I've only heard of that game, never played it myself. Myself, I'm a sucker for a good racing game so it's only natural for me to be looking at Forza 3. Although exclude the modern Need For Speed franchise; Underground 1/2 were the last to be somewhat interesting, Hot Pursuit 2 was good for network play (on campus, lol). The great ones from that series were Porsche Unleashed (great visuals + damage) and the original Hot Pursuit. At least, that goes for me, but I digress. And lost my original point I think.

Time to relive some old Sierra glory.

Let's see, what games have I played within the past year that I thought were pretty awesome...

Resident Evil 5 (Challenging campaign as well as long, but a ton of fun loaded with lots of suspense)
Fallout 3 (My personal #1 game of the year. Simply amazing and just too damn fun!)
Guitar Hero: Metallica (Best incarnation in the series, bar none, if you ask me)
Ghostbusters (Fuck you, I liked it! Haha)
Modern Warfare 2 (Campaign only, multiplayer sucks reams of ass)
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (One of the best games I've ever played. Visually stunning and extremely engaging. I can't say enough about it!)
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (Incredible game in terms of graphics and gameplay. Really had a movie-like quality to it)

On a quick note, a game I can't say is among my favorites of this year, but deserving of mention is Demon's Souls. Love the concept behind it, but goddamn is it fucking HARD AS SHIT! Very unforgiving in terms of what you can lose more so than gain, so unless you have the time and the patience to put up with dying on a consistent basis, I'd advise against playing it!

BTW, I cannot wait for God of War 3 as well as Singularity. Both those games look good and the GoW3 Demo was fun as hell!

I don't think I'm familiar with Saboteur...what type of game is it going to be and will it be multi-platform or console-exclusive?

I wanted to get it too but most reviews I have read didn't sound TOO great...although the subject does sound cool and I usually dig open world games. I'll have to read some more reviews, maybe rent it first. I did hear the missions are pretty repetitive.

Currently trying to beat Call of Duty 4 on veteran difficulty. Sure ain't easy!

So I borrowed my roommate's copy of Dragon Age: Origins, and have been rocking it as a short bald dorky looking lecherous dwarf named Bumblefoot. It's amazing.

The love scenes with him are the best.

I just got New Super Mario Borthers Wii, and it's pretty entertaining. It lacks the artistry and depth necessary to warrant snobbery, but it's pretty fun if you're a fan of the old NES games.

I also just played through Bioshock for the first time on my roommate's PS3. I have to say, I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. The plot was a little silly, but it's a video game, so I measure its value in the quality of my entertainment. Let's just say I'm looking forward to its sequel. I think I'll play through it on a harder difficulty first, though.

Another game I've played recently is Assassin's Creed (again on PS3). I don't see what all the hype was about. This game was pretty much rubbish--repetitive gameplay, lackluster plot, and too many irritating aspects to make it lovable. I wonder how AC 2 will stack up in comparison, though.

Leech, let me know how you like Saboteur. I remember how cool that looked at E3.

I play it at work.

Some people rag on Nintendo for this, but if it ain't broke don't fix it.

That game is fucking solid.

AC2 has no repetition. The story is coherent, the characters are drawn out, and basically everything that was bad about AC1 has been fixed in AC2.

Except that "music appreciation" would generally indicate appreciation of music on a deeper level, whereas a thread about what video games you've being playing recently doesn't at all.

Games are also pretty different from music, in that anyone can make a good song in their bedroom (even though it might not sound as good as something recorded on professional equipment), whereas a small team of indie game developers are generally extremely limited in the kind of game experience they can create.

In case anyone's interested - Stalker: Call of Prypiat is ace. It rights most of the series' wrongs. tl;dr without spoilers below.

Reached the ending without any crash to desktop or a game breaking bug (game straight out of the box, no patching). Runs much better than Clear Sky on my config while maps are pretty big and really complex in places (underground areas are usually accessible seamlessly without any loaders, wohoo). Crappy design from previous parts is de-crappyfied. Finally no grinding, no linear parts meant only to force the storyline further and no getting shot in the face for no reason. Actually game's pretty easy and tame by Zone's standards, lots of exploration, not that much shooting (unless you want - keep in mind it's usual "ain't hitting shit without at least high end NATO rifle" Stalker ballistics) - which is right up my alley since exploration is my favorite aspect of the franchise. Factions are bit more chilled out and even drink in the same bar without trying to kill each other. There's sleeping, repairing and modding of equipment as well. AI is cooler, finally most NPCs are doing something: sleeping, drinking, hunting artifacts with detectors, looting shot enemies or running for cover during blowouts (while having no problems with pathfinding - looks like it's also improved). Game has megaton of atmosphere, as usual.

Best gaming purchase since Fallout 3, I love it to the bits. And I'm still playing it since it has freeplay after main storyline, yay!
