Went to see Avatar today, I'm lucky in that there's an IMAX about 15 mins from my gaff, so I went there. It was £13 each (premier seats too!) but I got there early this morning and did the Orange Wednesday business so it was £6.50 8)

Visuals, it was pretty good, plot was dull as shit. Like, it's alright to have the odd bit of CGI, but I don't think it's the future of films. Lord of the Rings was visually much superior to me and that was down to getting everything as real as possible (yeah there was a lot of computer stuff in that but only when it had to be)

But as Avatar is the top grossing film of all time, I guess it goes to show how people love hype.

I don't disagree with any of these notions other than I liked the plot a bit more than you did (I've said this many times but I'm a sucker for new worlds). What I'd really love is for a film to properly combine practical effects and cgi on that scale. Use the cgi for cleaning up the practical stuff!

oh I loved the new world stuff, but it was exactly like every other war film! On the effects side of things, perhaps I'm being baised being an FX model maker...but I just think we're in a honeymoon period with CGI. I have people disagreeing with me constantly (except my dissertation tutor who said everyone talks about it, but I'm the only one who has an unretarded conclusion), but at the end of the day, CGI takes longer, costs more, and is nothing more than a bunch of computers and occasionally motion capture equipment. Besides, while there's directors, producers, model makers, costume designers, actors, etc. who still wana do it the traditional way, films will still be made the traditional way. CGI does have it's place as something that can achieve the previously unachievable, but that's where it should stay!

CGI blood...

Agreed. Nothing like watching someone lose a limb and it seem like you should have a controller in your hands.

Agreed, depending on the tone of the film (something like the blood splatter from the helicopter in Planet Terror seemed to make sense) but CGI explosions are NEVER satisfying. I guess the reason I say that is because blood on screen is pretty much always going to be fake... but you can actually blow shit up, y'know without killing a guy.

The Children some strange virus or whatever turns bunch of children into homicidal freaks, and apparently their parents to complete idiots. Promising start but fails to deliver.

Bitch Slap finally movie with plenty on cleavage, and little sense  B-movie for sure, Julia Voth is foxy :classic:

Finally second viewing of District 9 This is just so good.

District 9, after reading a lot of positive reviews about it here. I liked it, unconventional sci-fi thing. :)

Clint Eastwood's Flags of our fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. I liked them, nice approach to the genre, giving the voice to the enemy and showing how screwed the "heroes" were.

I'm also catching up with House M.D., watched one episode on the TV by accident and now I'm hooked, watching first two seasons from the DVD. Love it, House is one magnificent bastard.
