Trying to make a 'musical' without the sphincter tightening embarrassment that comes with trying to convey a story through music was the goal in some ways...

I like musicals for the emotional elements, but inevitably it turns into 10 minute songs about putting water in a bucket or something stupid just to tell a story with people dancing in the streets and exaggerated conversations set to random melodies. It's not really my thing... I want to make good songs and vibes that are kind of connected to a common end instead...that way I feel you can dig the songs without having to engage in some stupid story.

Totally get what you're trying to say, and I'm really glad that you confirmed for us - without a doubt - that Deconstruction will NOT consist of ten minute long songs about putting water in buckets, with people dancing in the streets and singing exaggerated conversations set to random melodies. And, you can completely tell a good story without making it cheesy - just look at Opeth's My Arms, Your Hearse. Every song's lyrics end with the title of the next track; the whole album is one giant story (beautifully written, IMO) and yet you can listen to all the songs individually and they still make sense. And, I doubt Mikael, Peter and Martin were feeling any sphincter tightening embarrassment when they wrote and recorded it, either, so it just goes to show that it can be done, and done right. You're right, there's a fine line between good execution and bad execution, but we have faith in you, Dev.

And, even if some people think the song Cheeseburger is stupid (because it's about... well... cheeseburgers) I'm sure you'll be forgiven, because it sounds absolutely wicked musically. Is the cheeseburger topic a metaphor, or did you really just want to write a song about an all beef patty with pickles and onions on a sesame seed bun?

Absolutely not speaking for Dev, but what I've always loved about him is that he's absolutely smart enough to talk about deep spiritual topics, but always there's a part of him that is a reality check / BS detector. And he's his worst critic in that regard. I've always assumed that "Cheeseburger" was the reality check, to come back into the present moment and keep it simple / real. Of course that sounds heavy so you make it humourous and that's the Dev we love.

keeping it short:

The character goes to hell to confront himself, his fears and his demons. He meets the 'devil' and realizes that it is himself, and he moves on to believing his is now capable of understanding the universe and everything having conquered the fear of himself..

This arrogance leads him to the furthest corners of his mind until he is presented with a vision of the sum of everything. It ends up being a cheeseburger, presented by a choir of angels. The point is that EVERYTHING EXISTS IN EVERYTHING, and the whole time his arrogance has led him to absurd personal dramas based on the arrogance that the universe is actually just an equation to be solved, when really... there is nothing but reality. For example, deconstruction a fractal (mandelbrot) is endless, but the equation is elegant and subtle.

The cheeseburger (or whatever he was looking at, it doesn't matter really) needed to be absurd to make the point. I guess the point may be that feeling the need to conquer everything is simply a reflection of powerlessness overall.

He finds the true nature of what he was looking at so closely when he stands back and observes it from a distance, and from a distance it becomes something uninteresting. So Ghost starts.
