the dark crystal
i don't know why i haven't seen it until now... they just don't make movies like this anymore. seriously. CGI can bite me.

priest
only because i like paul bettany and i like ALL things catholic. this was just too hokey, to modern, too action packed, too played out, too much sexualized virgin she-priest with constantly visible nipples. the post-apocalyptic western thing could be cool, but not this time. post-apocalyptic anything is pretty played out at this point, unfortunately...
however, i did appreciate the general lack of 'sexy" vampires. hopefully that fad is passing. the bela lugosis and christopher lees of the world are allowed, but the nosferatu types will always be my favorites.
super mega bonus for brad dourif though! i had no idea he was in it! i love brad dourif. love. LOVE.

Barglefargleborken! First time watching Dark Crystal! Oh how I envy you. What a beautiful film. And you are absolutely right. There is a tangibility (if that is in fact the word I think it is) that CG just can't manage at the moment.

i wish i'd seen it when i was younger because i really can't get much in the way of warm fuzzies from movies like this anymore. i'm too old and cranky. wah wah waaahhh.
CGI takes the soul and creativity out of things. knowing that people had to come up with ways to design and articulate these puppets without making it look like garbage instead of just rendering it on a computer is so impressive. i can't remember what they were called, but the big sloth/horse creatures they rode to the castle were so much more awesome than anything i've seen since the early 90s because while they were obviously people bent over on stilts, THAT'S EXACTLY WHY IT WAS SO COOL. CGI has had it's day and now it's gotten to the point of... like.. hyper-reality. it's just as bad as it was when it first came on teh scene. personally, i thin kit was at it's peak in jurassic park, where it was used to boost animatronics and stop motion.

my file glitched out on me right on a closeup of fizzgig screaming and looped it a few times. it was the best thing to happen all week.

^Agree with Jurassic Park. Funny how the CG in the sequels looked more and more cartoonish with bigger budgets and technology development.

Recently watched Airplane II on TV after not seeing it in years. Just as I'd remembered it though: silly fun, but nowhere near as good as the original.

I got Dark Crystal one year for Easter as a kid and freaking loved it but none of my friends would watch it with me because it scared them.

Their loss, awesome movie.

Dark Crystal = awesome! Had it on VHS, then twice on DVD and now Blu-Ray, that's how much I love it. There's not a whole lot of movies that I'd buy that many times. Fight Club (7 times) and Dawn of the Dead (5 times) :P

well, sylkicks has inspired me to gives this whole one horror flick per day thing a go too. Well, might not actually watch one per day but I'll try to watch plenty. Yesterday it was:

THE BEYOND

Image

IMDb wrote:The cellar of an old hotel is built on top of the door to the beyond. Bloody zombies roam there. A young woman who is heir of the hotel wants to restaurate it. She is confronted with strange events. A painter has a lethal fall, the plumber vanishes and her friend breaks his neck. When she escapes to the hospital of a friendly doctor she doesn't know what a nightmare is waiting there...

Man, I love this movie. It's one of those where I had a shitty VHS copy when I was young, then a not much better DVD version and last but not least an awesome Blu-ray. This one's a real classic to me. It's from the spaghetti zombie movie era and directed by horror cult director Lucio Fulci. If you're not familiar with his work and can appreciate old and kitsch low budget horror flicks then you should at least give 'The Beyond' a try. It's bizarre, weird, creepy but at the same time sooooo wonderfully kitschy. They don't make horror flicks like this anymore and it would be a shame if movies like this one were forgotten one day. Oh and even Quentin Tarantino is a fan of this flick :P

Here's what I watched tonight

FROM BEYOND

Image

IMDb wrote:Dr. Pretorius and his colleagues are working on a sensational experiment: by means of stimulation of the pineal gland, they want to open the human mind to higher dimensions. When the experiment succeeds, however, they are immediately attacked by terrible life forms, which apparently are floating around us all the time. When Dr. Pretorius is killed by one of them, Dr. Tillinghast is under suspect and thrown into the psycho ward due to his stories. Only the ambitious psychologist Dr. McMichaels believes him and wants to continue the experiment.

Another film I love. Saw this one when I was a kid on a VHS tape from my older sister and boy did it creep me out back then. And it's still pretty creepy and bizarre today. If you enjoy handmade gore and special effects the way you find them in movies like The Thing or Hellraiser then do yourself a favor and watch this movie. It's available on DVD, at least in the US.

Ah-ha! I've converted one to my cause :D

Here's my next installment, once again copy and pasted from Facebook:

10/3: My horror film of the today was David Cronenberg's "Videodrome." I've only seen several of Cronenberg's films and, in typical fashion for him, "Videodrome" did not disappoint. A critical take on mass media consumption and our obsession with violence as a people, this film stands up just as strongly as it did at it's creation despite massive changes in technology since. The disturbing gore and bodily disfigurement are very well done and have a nice B-movie schlock to them that I love (very Cronenberg). A thought provoking horror film while still laying on the disgusting in a very imaginative way. Melting into a TV screen and having a gun mechanically bond with your hand whilst a tape inserted into your female genitalia-shaped stomach hole controls you? Long live the new flesh.
8.5/10

10/4: Today my horror film was Wes Craven's "The Last House on the Left." An iconic horror film with it's share of flaws, the movie finds two teenage girls kidnapped by escape convicts who get more than they bargained for when encountering one of their victims parents. The film becomes an odd torture-pornish/buddy cop movie hybrid and it's quite a jolt going from gruesome, hyper-realistic scenes of murder to a couple of policemen running out of gas trying to catch the criminals. However, this is what makes the movie different and sort of allows such depressing images of violence be watchable as they are balanced with some sort of humor. As previously stated the movie has a fair bit of flaws mostly due to it's budget and failing many times in the realism department (ie the vengeful parents getting the murders at the end) but when it wants to disturb it truly succeeds.
7.5/10

10/5: My horror film 'o the day today was John Carpenter's "The Thing." I had never seen this before and after watching it tonight I have to say it is easily one of my favorite horror films ever. The story is about a research team in Antarctica who are suddenly attacked by a mysterious alien creature that infects and bonds with it's host. Really awesome, over the top, incredibly gory special effects are incredibly well done and despite being made in the early 80s genuinely creeped me out a few times. Carpenter shows how a survival horror, creature film is done right by setting a mood of paranoia and unease throughout the film that the viewer truly feels. Who is infected? What will they become? I also love me some Kurt Russell, so that certainly helped. An incredibly good horror film that is extremely ingenious in it's scares and how the monster is portrayed.
9/10

And there ya go. Pluggin' right along. I think tomorrow may be Audition, then some day soon I'm going to just pick some random horror film from Netflix. Can't just watch all good ones this month can I?

When you watch Audition, give us your thoughts on it pleeaasssee :) . I've been meaning to watch it so badly but wasn't really sure if its worth it or not. I guess it should be. Being a Japanese horror, it should be freakishly scary haha.

I've been meaning to watch it for forever, but you really, REALLY need to be in the mood for Japanese horror, especially Miike. I've seen one of his other films, Visitor Q, which is beyond disturbing (lactation, necrophilia, incest, abuse... You name it it has it) and I've heard Audition is even worse. Will be interesting...

BRAINDEAD (aka Dead Alive)

IMDb wrote:Lionel, a Mama's boy has the unwanted honor of having to look after his overbearingly evil mother. He ends up falling in love with a local woman who believes that they're destined together. In a moment of intentional sabotage of one of their dates, his mother is bitten by a mysterious creature that ends up zombifying her. It's only a matter of time before she rises from the dead a powerful, bloodthirsty zombie. It's only a matter of time before she starts infecting residents of the town and Lionel has to stop her...and them.

watched the original uncut version that has quite a bit of extra content compared to the American unrated cut. One of the best splatter movies ever, in my opinion (it's banned here in Germany, BTW). Used to watch it with friends on VHS. Unfortunately the fully uncut version never really got a really good DVD release with plenty of bonus material, etc., as far as I know. And the recent Blu-Ray release with the shorter unrated cut isn't really of interest to me either. Once you've seen the fully uncut version you don't want to watch it any other way anymore. Anyways...great flick! I guess one of the next flicks I'll watch will have to be BAD TASTE....

Yup awesome stuff, it's called Dead Alive in some regions.
Did not like Bad Taste at all though.

Watched The Castle the other night and wasn't expecting much; it's this tiny low-budget Australian movie from the late 90s that takes the absolute piss out of the Australian working class when a family is gonna be kicked out of their home by the government to allow for the expansion of an airport. The humour is so simple and obvious but some of it was just fucking hilarious. I was very taken aback by how much I enjoyed it... Looked it up after and a lot of other people did too, for a film that was only made for $19,000, it made over $10,000,000 at the box office! It's kinda sad in some parts but when it's on the ball with the humour, it's feckin' fantastic.

You're an ideas man, Leech.

12 Monkeys Due to Dev's use of the movie, I decided to check it out. Liked it. Maybe just because it had Bruce Willis, but eh, Brad Pitt sure is a crazy muthalicka.

Source Code Very good. I liked its cleverness and premise, the twists are quite engaging. I felt connected to the character as well, just because of Gyenhall's perfomance. A sci-fi Groundhog Day.

Scream I had always wanted to see it, being a fan of postmodern movies. It was everything I expected, and I loved the nod to Nightmare on Elm Street with the janitor.

I'm gonna print that compliment, frame it, and then it's going straight in the pool room.
