I want to see this. What's sad is that Kevin Smith is planning on retiring. What I've heard about Red State (for the most part) is that it's not all that great but it is quite original. I feel as though Kevin Smith is talented enough to really hone this style and turn it into a new direction for himself.

Of course, I could be completely wrong. He hasn't put out a good movie since Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (IMO).

Smith retiring would be not such a loss for me, he made some decent movies, and a good one, in my opinion, and the good one was not even in colours. That said I have not seen Red State, and it could change my opinion.
Jersey Girl, Clerks 2, Zach and Miri make a porno and Cop out have not even had the fun factor from his previous films and we're lacking in dialogs, which was what I liked most about his movies.

For all interested, it's on Netflix.

and I actually like Clerks 2, but not any of the other recent stuff he's done. I used to love him, but he became kind of annoying since he started smoking weed all of the time. That being said, Red State surprised me. Don't expect the best movie ever, but I wouldn't say it's bad. As I said before, I think it's his best movie.

I love Kevin Smith, and have really been wanting to see Red State. Awesome it's on Netflix now, I will certainly watch it. Bums me out he's retiring :/

Ah, is THAT what happened to Kevin Smith. I see.

*googles*

So he smokes too much weed, gets paranoid, loses a bunch of weight and announces his retirement as a director pending his reincarnation as Kevin Smith 2.0. He's not friends with Joaquin Phoenix or Casey Affleck is he?

Also, lol@ someone born in 1970 "retiring" from anything.

my most recent horror flicks:

John Carpenter's Vampires. Welll, that's another case of 'used to be great when I was younger but now....meh'. I mean, the special effects are nicely done and hand made but the movie itself just ain't really special. I guess 'In the mouth of madness' really was Carpenter's last great movie.

Demon Knight. Now that one I actually still enjoy. I was kind of expecting it to disappoint me nowadays after not having seen it for a long time but I still enjoy that one. The gore and splatter effects are pretty good and it's as cheesy as you'd expect a horror/splatter flick from the 90's to be. And it's always fun to see the crypt keeper! :D

Horror movies for the past couple days:

10/19: My horror film of the day today was Joel Anderson's "Lake Mungo." A slow burning faux documentary from Australia the film follows a family who have lost their 16 year old daughter and start finding strange things happening in their home after her death. This is a very intriguing and different ghost movie in the fact that it's not so much about a haunting as it is about a family's dealing with grief and the dark secrets their daughter held. The film starts off pretty typical for a ghost film (ie spirit caught on tape, etc) but slowly begins playing with this notion and eventually arrives at a spot you never imagined it to. Deeply disturbing but not in the way you would think. Anderson doesn't rely on scares as much as just creepy material that really doesn't have to do with the ghost. I was deeply engaged the entire film wondering what new mysteries would be revealed and what exactly is truly real as the film plays with this quite a lot. The documentary aspect is very believable as well. Highly recommended.

10/20: For tonight's horror film I watched Marc Price's "Colin." The premise of the film revolves around a young man who has been bitten by a zombie and how he deals with his new existence. With that in mind I had very high hopes and expectations for the film but I was ultimately very disappointed. Such a great premise of telling the story of a zombie film from the zombie's own perspective is rich, original, and has great potential to give some humanity (oxymoron, perhaps) to the zombies who are usually so faceless. While Price attempts to do this with this movie he ultimately fails. Scenes drag on for far, far longer than needed, the few characters in the film are not defined in the least (save maybe Colin to an extent), and for such an original idea nothing feels original. The film was also made on a very small budget and while I understand the limitations this gives it does not excuse putting zero effort into lighting or camera movement. The film uses mostly natural light which in theory is interesting but when I can't see a thing on screen due to it either being blown out or too dark that's a major problem. The shaky handheld cam could potentially give this film a nice aesthetic as well but instead makes many scenes indecipherable as action just becomes shapeless blobs. All these factors result in, as one reviewer I read put it, the film feeling like a potentially great short film that was blown up way to big into a feature length by a director who couldn't handle it. I'm sad I didn't like this film much at all, and it makes me hope someone can take this very interesting idea and give it the treatment it deserves in the future.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare. Hadn't seen it in years, and it finally got an individual DVD release here.

Yeah, in my opinion it's still a damn good movie. Freddy's look is cool, but I'll always prefer the way he looked in the first film. Funnier than I remembered it too, although it's not as silly as most of the other sequels. Skin the cat made me grin. I'd say it's still my favorite sequel alongside Dream Warriors.

I'm actually thinking about buying the Nightmare on Elm Street collection on Blu-Ray. It was just released here and I'm a total quality whore. Some of the sequels are kinda 'meh' but I love Freddy. And it's relatively cheap in the UK. Oh well, we'll see... . You know, I remember the days when I said that I'll never upgrade any movies from DVD to Blu-Ray. And I've done so about 236492434 times now already

My latest horror flick was:

David Cronenberg's The Fly. Such a wonderfully gross movie! I think it's still one of the best remakes ever. Jeff Goldblum did a great job in this one and managed to shift from lovable nerd to insane mutant freak just brilliantly. The special effects are great in this one too. It's a shame they hardly do handmade splatter and special effects anymore and use CGI instead. CGI in horror and splatter flicks just isn't any good.

First time in a bit that I've watched a movie I haven't seen before. Watched Peter Weir's The Way Home last night and it was a mighty fine experience.

No spoilers, so it's essentially an escape and survive film "inspired" by a true story set in WW2 that starts in Siberia and spans several countries. And it's one of the better films of the genre I've seen in a while.

It's visually spectacular - the scenery is captured so well and contributes the epic nature of the film. The acting is pretty much all good and Jim Sturgess makes a good youngish leader. But I thought it was the actors I didn't know that stole the show. Saoirse Ronan is beautiful and waifish and acts as a talisman for the men in the group and Dragos Bucur is the best actor in it, partly because he gets the best lines but more than anything he delivers them so well. Funny, amiable and charming.

I love walking so I felt right at home watching this movie. The ending is a little amateurish which sort of jars with the rest of the movie, but that's the only real criticism I can think of.

A good 4/5.

Gulliver's Travels Harmless load of bollocks, although Jack Black should really start to learn some new moves...

Source Code Now this was actually quite good, despite of the fact that my wife had already told me the plot. Sort of Groundhog Day, can't really give too much away. Jake Gyllenhaal does nice job and ending is bit two-fold, happy or is it... Watch it.

my last three flicks were Gremlins, From Dusk Till Dawn and Nightmare on Elm Street 3. Gremlins is one of my alltime favorites, loved it when I was a kid. Might not be that much of a horror flick but oh well, I don't care.
From Dusk Till Dawn is a movie I have always enjoyed. It makes no sense at all of course (same goes for Gremlins...don't get them wet but snow and beer doesn't do anything, he he) but I love the over the top craziness and all the violent nonsense!
And Nightmare 3 is probably the best Nightmare sequel. It's pretty cheesy and silly but enjoyable. And I guess it's kind of funny to see how many actors started their careers in Nightmare movies. Or horror flicks in general. :D
