this one actually surprised me. It was much better than I expected. Kind of reminded me of the old Tales from the Crypt and Masters of Horror episodes. It's basically 4 horror stories that occur in the same street and tie in really nicely, kind of the way you know it from movies such as Pulp Fiction or 11:14. There's plenty of good humor to be found as well. I guess I'll have to pick up the US Blu-Ray of this movie. :D

Awesome, I saw this movie at a film fest a few years back. Watched it again on Halloween. Just a fun movie all around and I like how he locks the storylines together

Moulin Rouge. The saddest film in the world, sometimes. But it's beautiful and funny too.

I fucking hate Moulin Rouge with a burning passion I have for few things. Baz Luhrman could die in a fire and the world would be a far better place

Ok, maybe that's a bit harsh... BUT REALLY I FUCKING HATE THAT FUCKING FUCK MOVIE.

Moving along, my final horror film:

10/31: For my last horror film of the month I watched Tobe Hooper's "Poltergeist." I'm sure everyone knows the premise but in case you don't a family is tormented by an evil spirit that reeks chaos and steals their daughter, holding her captive inside a television. I had oddly enough never seen the film before and I had high expectations going into it after the countless reproductions and parodies the film has received; it's a cultural and horror milestone. After watching I wouldn't say I'm disappointed but I really wasn't all that impressed either. The film often undermines itself by not being able to decide what kind of film it want's to be. Is it a horror-comedy? A ghost film? A monster movie? The mood constantly changes and doesn't allow itself to be clear on what it is. On one hand this is interesting but it often times feels more jumbled. Am I supposed to be scared or laughing? The score doesn't help much either as it does not often fit what is happening on screen. That being said, though, the film has many horrifying scenes and great, over the top special effects that sometimes almost reach Carpenter or Cronenberg levels (but never quite) and I think it is for this reason that the film holds it's place in history. Not a bad film by any means but ultimately it feels unsure of itself.
7.5/10

Wow, that's a strong reaction. Did you choke on a peanut while you were watching it and give yourself a fright or something? :D But anyway, that's okay. I'm not at all keen on horror movies, hence my not having watched very many past the old Hammer Horrors. We all have different tastes.

Oh no, not shitting on you for liking it or anything. I just hate that damn movie, mainly from a film making perspective. There's a laundry list of things I could say under that umbrella but the most glaring is the editing. It's so unbelievably irritatingly fast the entire movie, even in scenes that don't need it all. It was bad in Romeo and Juliet, which I actually kinda liked, but it hurts my brain in Moulin Rouge. I also will never forgive him for absolutely butchering Roxeanne. In fact I don't think I've ever finished the movie...
I'm actually, oddly enough, not a huge horror fan myself. Which makes zero sense seeing as how I devoted a whole month to them.

He edits like Steve Harris on a live Iron Maiden DVD.

I didn't think you were complaining at me. I was just intrigued at your vehemence for the movie itself and wondered what had caused it. I had visions more along the lines of your having had a bad experience during it or something. :D Yes, I didn't much care for the rendition of Roxanne but I like the novelty of most of the rest of the music in it. I always just assumed it was meant to be fast paced and manic. It's got a horribly sad ending though. Ewan's crying tears my heart out every time.

I kinda feel like Baz is devolving as a director. I enjoy his films less and less with each new one, to the point that I couldn't watch more than a few minutes of Australia. This may also have something to do with my dislike of "our Nic".

Dude, you will love this then:

Basically, it's things to take into the movie with you to help you watch the film. My favorite entries were these:

"Steve Irwin Doll: Every time you hear anyone on screen utter the word "Crikey" give little Steve a squeeze. Consider it a tribute."

"An MP3 of the Qantas ad where the children sing: play it throughout the film to see if it syncs anywhere."

^ Ha! Not that I will ever put myself through the movie... Though Romeo and Juliet was good.

Moon : Went in with zero knowledge of it, went out with absolute surprise. A friend told me that it was directed by David Bowie's son after I saw it, she's made me want to see it again!

Scream 2 : Liked it better than the first because of its heavier self-reflexivity. Very textually dynamic movie. Randy and Dewey are such bosses 8)

I'm not a fan of Jim Schembri at all, but I think he hit the nail on the head right there!

Should have won a fuckload of awards that year.

That year Brad Pitt, who I very much like, was nominated for Benjamin Button. The Academy dropped the ball with that one.

The Exorcist 2

well, I was told for years not to watch it. Everyone has always told me how much it sucks. Well, I should have listened to them. Wow...just wow. This must be one of the worst horror movie sequels ever. Well, it's not really a horror movie anyways. It's incredibly lame and boring. Nothing ever happens in that movie and the climax is pretty lame too as they tried to squeeze in some action and failed horribly. That was my first and last time wasting my time with this train wreck.

Then today I watched The Exorcist 3.

And actually that one is not too bad! Well, after Exorcist 2 this one could have hardly been any worse but it actually is not a bad movie! Maybe that's because the author of the original The Exorcist, William Peter Blatty, wrote this one too and also directed it. There's plenty of good and partly funny dialogue to be found, the story ain't too bad (hey, at least there is a story that makes sense in this one), the actors do a good job...the only thing that is a bit weird is the cameos. Not sure why Larry King and Fabio needed to be in this movie but oh well...
