Scott Pilgrim vs the World I've been planning to watch this ages ago but somehow there's always been something else. Well, now it finally came out of tv so saved few euros as I didn't have to rent it, and that's not the only positive thing about this film. It actually was quite entertaining, even though Michael Cera is annoying twat it didn't completely spoil experience. Cartoony effects were spot on for this kind of movie and dialoque was also pretty clever in time to time. Recommended.

Another little gem from tv, Alien Raiders. Was really looking forward it to be completely shaite but it was actually quite good, not masterpiece by any standards and probably not going to achieve any cult status either but still enjoyable. Seen worse big budget movies for sure...

Les Miserables was incredible-- well acted, sung, and beautifully shot. Anne Hathaway absolutely killed it, especially in O Dreamed a Dream. It had a few pretty minor flaws, but overall just a beautiful, touching film. The opening scene Just blew me away. Gonna definitely win some Oscars, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it take best picture.

I haven't seen Les Mis in the theater yet, but "I Dreamed A Dream" is such a gut-wrenching song. So, so beautiful (not Susan Boyle's).

I watched Prometheus a few nights ago. Was much better than what I expected. The average every-day Joe/internet "critic" loves to tear apart everything. Luckily I don't listen to anyone. Anyway, I was quite happy with it, since Alien and Aliens are in my top 5.

I do my best not to rant about Prometheus. The only important thing to note is that shows that Ridley Scott truly isn't a good director. He has had his good films, but he himself is lacklustre.

Interesting isn't it? You'd think that someone who is capable of making movies as influential as Blade Runner (my all-time favourite film) and Alien (pretty much re-invented sci-fi), and generally well-regarded movies like Gladiator, Thelma and Louise and Matchstick Men could lay claim to being pretty freaking awesome. But then, he also made movies like G.I. Jane and Robin Hood.

Overall I have huge respect for him due mainly to his early work. But he's more hit and miss than his rep might suggest.

^Yeah, Robin Hood I couldn't forgive. G.I. Jane and Body of Lies...tolerable, the latter more so (okay, I liked it).

Watched my Blu-Ray copy of Dogma that came in today (survived the heat of a day in my mailbox, all the better).

Having last seen it maybe 8 years ago, I was glad to still find it funny and poignant. It holds as the third best Kevin Smith film in my eyes. I'll get around to watching the features later, as they're quite a bunch.

well, I've watched Prometheus 4 times now in total. The last 2 times with both director audio commentary and writer audio commentary and I honestly do not know what's not to like about the movie. If you know what the intention was and realize that there really are no plot holes or whatever the usual emo blogger nerds complain about then I personally think it's really, really good.

There's so many totally useless rants to be read online about this movie. Just yesterday I visited a friend who works in a store and there was a customer going like "yeah, it sucks because they fucked up the ending. The engineer didn't die in the seat the way the crew finds him in Alien. That didn't make any sense!" I mean, what's one supposed to say to a guy like that? :P

as for Scott, sure he's made a few movies that were not so good, to say the least. But which director hasn't? I've watched plenty of stuff on him over the past months and listened to plenty of audio commentaries and have nothing but respect for the guy. As a director he's got talents that others can only dream of.

Can't I just find it kinda cool?

Like, there seems to be no middle ground on that film. I thought it was pretty, interesting and a nice mature sci fi film with a budget for once.

I have no problem with Scott's direction, it just tends to be more big picture and can often lack a signature or character.

I saw Silver Linings Playbook. Best movie of the year as far as I'm concerned. Very sweet, and sincere. First romantic film since Eternal Sunshine that I can say I really loved.

hmmm, I actually like the fact that Scott's movies don't have that typical director's signature. That's one thing I don't like about Nolan and might just be the only thing I don't like about him as a director. Sure, when you watch a Nolan movie you know it's a Nolan movie but where's the surprise or artistic freedom? It's like he's built an artistic cage for himself that he can't get out of.
Now take movies like Blade Runner and American Gangster, they couldn't be more different from one another. And they're both excellent, in my opinion anyways.
And I love his way of working. He's got a picture in his head and knows exactly what a scene should look like. So he takes a pen and draws the whole thing and draws entire storyboards like that with amazing quality and then transforms the pictures into film. His only real problem may be that the people that work with him often have a hard time keeping up.
Oh well, different strokes for different blokes :D

in other news: Took a look at the Videodrome Blu-ray and it looks fantastic so that may be the next movie I'll watch.

And I also watched Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Wonderfully trashy and bizarre. Yes, the first one is MUCH better but this one I like simply because it's so nuts. I enjoy bizarre stuff like this one or the Basket Case flicks.

Jack Reacher Not bad, although I'm not quite sure if Cruise is right man for this role. Still, decent performance from him. Also pretty realistic gun sounds, reminds of Heat in that respect. If not mind blowing, solid is the word to best describe this movie.

The Wave, 2008 German version. Really good I thought, about a teacher who inadvertently turns his autocracy class into a fascist group. I read the novel in high school, which took place in America, so I thought seeing it from a German perspective would be more interesting, and it was. Worth searching for.

Dark Knight Returns Part 2: I'm a huge fan of the source material and of the first part so it went without saying that I would also adore this. My expectations however, were once again exceeded. For me the Nolan Batmans were fantastic the first time you watched but really didn't bear up well under repeated viewings, especially true of the final installment. These two films on the other hand got better with repeat viewings, for myself at least.

Dredd: All I can say about this film is go out and buy the damn DVD because this sucker flopped at the box office and it's the only way we're going to get sequels. Dark as Hell, packed with (slightly derivative but fantastically well presented) action scenes, great soundtrack, looks beautiful and presents Dredd about as well as is possible to do so. Think "Punisher: War Zone" with much better special effects and without the cheesy dialogue and tounge in cheek humour.

Hotel Transylvania: Proving once again that you cannot go wrong with Genndy Tartakovsky. After all the man gave us Samurai Jack, Dexter's Laboratory and the best Star Wars stories since Return of the Jedi. Classic story of an over protective father with a daughter that's coming of age, trying desperately to protect her from the big bad world he remembers outside his castle walls. Simple but effective story telling, stunning visuals, extremely likable characters and some really fantastic gags. Throw in some Tex Avery references and this gets a big thumbs up from me.

God dayum, that shootout in Heat... so good.

So I managed to watch the first 5 minutes of Riders (aka Steal) and burst out laughing when the inline skates came out.

Then I laughed even harder at the acting and changed the channel.
