Despite my disgust with the so-called Christians on that forum, I will admit after a drink or two it was pretty funny. Though that hasn't stooped me from deleting it permanently from my history.

I realise I could have just googled it, and I did wonder how the fuck the rape stuff was allowed to be discussed like that. Sucked in, I guess! Blame it on sleep deprivation!

That said, given the shit spouted by the Westborough gang, it's not that big a leap. Louis Theroux's doco on them was on TV last night and was a reminder of what a delightful bunch they are.

On a more personal note, certain stubborn members of my family have a habit of making what should be a celebratory occasion into an awkward, disgruntled mess.
Whether it's one having an impulsive, manic attitude or the other's sarcasm with a bitchy sense of entitlement, it becomes difficult to want to be around my family.
In fact, it makes me all the more convinced little to no interaction with them is the best way to go. Pity.

Another tech rant coming up again...

I had no lectures today, so I figured I'd have time to write that essay I should be returning very soon.
But oh, no can do... After taking a shower I fall asleep on the couch as usual. I finally manage to drag myself up around 2:30 PM. Then it's a quarter past three when I'm at my computer, writing some quick notes for the essay. An Avast update notification pops up: new version of the program is out. I click agree to download and install. Of course, hilarity ensues.

Now after restarting my laptop, Avast doesn't run at startup, and after manually starting it, bitches about how my system is not fully protected. Some shields are supposedly down, but the button to fix the issues does jack shit. AND, neither Zonealarm nor Winamp have started up despite being set to do so. I think it's probably just some random quirck and restart. Well, if the previous was not funny enough, now the whole PC grinds down to a halt for some reason. Steam stops responding when starting up, folders take forever to "find" their content, start menu search does the same, etc.

Okay, to the living room to fire up the older PC to google for help and to download the Avast uninstaller. Also restarted the laptop in safe mode. Just for shits & giggles, I roll back to the restore point generated before updating Avast today, and I'll be damned, everything's back to smooth and normal. But I still want to update Avast, so it's off to safe mode and unistalling Avast completely before doing a fresh new install. And now it finally seems to be working like it should have been after making the mistake of updating through the GUI.

What gives?! This very same thing happened once with the older PC too. Updating the program through the GUI royally messes things up. Real fun. Well, still better than your machine going totally FUBAR when having deadlines looming ahead, but still.
And you know what's also fun? This time of the year, when there's no snow and it gets totally dark by 6:30 PM.

I had the very same experiences with it. Had to uninstall and reinstall it several times in the past because updating the program messed things up. It's been like that for years. Really, really weird.

Good to hear I'm not the only one!
The same thing happened with the older XP machine some time ago too. I'm pretty sure they've been informed about it, but I sent Avast feedback about it anyway. Really strange behaviour indeed.

On a sad note, my wife has been admitted to the hospital.

On a lighter note, it's only a kidney stone and a UTI. But still, this is her first night in the hospital, and I had to come home. Tomorrow night though, I'll be right in there with her.

Hope she makes a speedy recovery, dude.

So, I sent a customer support email to Avast. I described the problem, how I manually removed and reinstalled the program, and how's it now seems to be working OK. Also mentioned the same problem having occurred before on an older XP machine and wondered what could cause it.
Lo and behold, got a reply today. Guess what they said? In the reply they recommended trying to repair the installation, and if that didn't help, do a manual full reinstall, with detailed instructions. I really can't tell if they even bothered reading my email...

Absolutely crippled by the fiercest stomach flu I've ever had since Wednesday night. I was a live human enema for some 24 hours, which left me *completely* empty. Had to go to the supermarket today for toiletpaper (amazing how quickly that can go in this situation, lol), which was just awful with all the people and the noise and me not having eaten a proper anything since it started. And of course I'm running into two major deadlines coming week, so this is just excellent timing. *sigh*

I did manage to satisfy a rare craving for yoghurt though. No idea what that's about as I rarely eat that stuff, but hey, I wanted, I got it, and it was gooood.
