I'm currently on wXP, but I'm installing Linux (Ïa!) soon.

Starspree, how large should my partition for Mandrake 10.0 be? And does it matter that I need SP1 for XP to use that part of the HD not to corrupt it? I don't have SP1, and I'm using PartitionMagic 8.0.

Ever since experiencing the OS, mac all the way. I've joined their fancy club and learned the secret handshake.

if you're using partition magic make sure too defrag before you make your changes. with linux you have to create two partitions one will be your linux filesystem and the other will be your memory swap space. Make the swap about as big as the amount of RAM you have. And make your linux file system about 2-4 gb.

Do I have to install SP1 before using the unallocated HD space?
EDIT: It sounds ridiculous, I know.

[quote="simen_88Do I have to install SP1 before using the unallocated HD space?

I did software support for 2 years, that's not so bad.

Customer: I need some help installing the program.
Me: Really? Why what's wrong?
Customer: I'm not sure what to do.
Me:What does it say on your screen?
Customer: It says, "welcome to installation, click OK to continue" what should I do?
Me:... OOOOOK. So it says, "click OK to continue"
Customer:Yes.
Me: And you're not sure what to do?
Customer: No.
Me: Sorry, what does the screen say again?
Customer: It says, "click OK to continue"

I got to this point quite often, most of the time at this stage, I'd start yelling, "CLICK OK YOU FUCKING MORON!!!" But one time I said,

Me: Hmm... this sounds very tricky, please hold while I consult my supervisor.

I know it sounds like I'm a cranky grinch but I was really enthusiastic and dilligent when I first started. After a while of phone support, you become very bitter and stale.

I had a list of all the stupid things customers said, its classic, I have to find it.

I know exactly what you mean... I've worked at phone support for half a year, and after that I ran away screaming. Now I work at the ICT Servicedesk at my university... so if someone calls and starts to ask stupid questions I can just go over there and do it myself in a lot less time... Really helps with the bitter and stale problem!

I started making people install VNC so I wouldn't have to talk to them.

No, but rebooting actually derives from kicking your PC with a boot. Old computers, anyone?

And, sledging a PC on windows is usually referred to as standard exiting windows 98. At least at home.
