Remember vinyl back in the day? Remember some of the bands that put so much into the artwork, lyric sheets, etc? Off hand I can think of the early White Zombie LPs and EPs. Rob Zombie put a lot of work into those releases. You can't download that stuff.

You can't download the 10 killer pages of artwork that Geoff is going to do. Right now there are ways for bands to try and combat illegal downloading, giving them something they can't download is one way. I'm sure someone will scan the artwork, but it's clearly not the same.

Ofcourse, having the original thing is is 100 times better than having any copy. And a good 95% of the music I have downloaded I've bought the cd for when it was released. And I don't tend to download music unless I have heard a song from the band somewhere before and liked it. From there I would download the album the check out the rest of the song and if I like them, I buy their cd.

I don't mass produce music to sell illegal copies, or even download albums so I wouldn't have to buy them. I just use the whole download thing as a "try before you buy" kinda thing. Just so I know when I buy the cd, I'll be worth my money.

I'd download it in a second, burn it onto a CD then have a brain hemmorage trying to resist listening to it.

But when I finally do listen to it, it's going to be with my headphones plugged into my ears, loud enough so that everyone else in my house can hear it, sitting in my bed with a cup of tea in my hand.

One weird thing about Devin's music is that, unlike 99% of the bands I like right now, I would have discovered it without downloading/music burning since my friend gave me an extra copy of City that she had and I was hooked from then on.

the first album I d/l'd was alien.
I then went on to buy the limited edition dvd version, and now I also have bought the limited edition vinyl of alien.
Ok I downloaded it, but I still spent heaps of money on it, and and let people hear something wicked that they've never heard before, then ask for it in a cd shop before it's released, starts talking about it and hunting for it and a chain of people hear about it all because of this premature leak.
Did alien not if not still, sell well??

but for synchestra, if its like terria, the first listen is very cool with the artwork before your eyes, and this is why I want to wait for Synchestra.

I was somehow able to avoid downloading Alien, and while I did download Shitstorm, it was after the band released it on the internet. I was very tempted to download the entire album after Shitstorm was put out, and I think I'll be able to avoid downloading Synchestra as well, although it may be even tougher since I'm even more excited about this, I think it is one of those things that I shouldn't listen to before it's put out how the band wants it put out, because getting it beforehand, before all the tracks have their final masters and such, like with what I've heard about the preliminary downloading of Alien, could possibly hurt it when I finally do hear the final product. Even though, even if I did download it before everything's totally final, I think I'd still be blown away by it. Anyway, I'm going to wait, because I was the best possible first impression, and I'm sure I won't have any regrets once all is said and done.

I downloaded Alien and didn't regret it. I also bought it the day it came out but thats kinda beside the point. The real problem is can you deal with the fact that it's not sonically perfect? Most people can, most people will notice almost nothing. I download Alien and enjoyed it a little less than I enjoy the cd, but downloading diddn't ruin it for me. The first time you hear a song it makes no difference if your listning to an mp3 or a CD in my opinion because what your listining to the first time you hear it is preserved fine in most mp3 rips. Unless your really strange and cant wait to hear what the cymbals are doing 100% of the time. That being said I won't bev downloading it when it leaks cuz it would make it less exciting when I'm buying the acual cd.

I'm definitely not gonna download it. I love the feeling of relaxing somewhere and hearing the the real thing for the first time. I wanna be able to look at the cd booklet and stuff as I listen to it also.
It also helps that I don't have any downloading programs. heh.

I will buy the album, I have bought a t-shirt. I will download the album but there is no way in hell that I would be one of these leeching fuckers who download and never actually buy the albums. The DTB have obviously worked very hard with this album, its a small price to pay to simply buy the album.

I may download it

But as DTB has a bigger impact on me than SYL I may force myself to wait.

What matters is that I WILL buy it.

There is no fucking question about that at all.

I didnt download the Alien leak, and if there is one of Synch, I wont be getting that either, takes all the fun out of getting it in your hands for the first time.

A question to all of you who will download it: will you at least resist the temptation and NOT post here about how awesome the album is, at least until it is officially released?

This will be a problem we will inevitably have to deal with. On the SYL board, we had to create a separate thread for this type of discussion. Not sure if we will do this here.

I think you should. It would spoil the mood for me, if I read "ooh I like the part where he goes..." all over the place, so you eventually have read the entire album described before it's out, and you kinda know everything.

i'm a big music downloader, also a pretty big buyer. its all part of the process these days. Some albums I buy blind, but most of the times I'll be buying a bunch of cd's that I've already gotten to know as mp3s.
It's not all that different from the old days, when I'd have tapes or borrowed copies of friends cds.

But for some reason I've managed to hold off listening to any dev album 'til I owned a copy. Just worked out that way. After hearing all kinds of stuff here and there I bought one album and it payed off, so I was excited to slowly buy the others, with no need to hear them or get a taste.
Plus, its exciting getting a brand new album. Downloading generally ruins the whole ritual. I WISH I'd have just bought alot of the albums I now love, but had I not given them the curious download I wouldn't have been interested enough to buy it.
