I have talked about these a few times and I am still a bit confused. Many products seem similar and dunno what to buy.

I am leaning towards M-Audio MobilePre or Fast Track, maybe even line 6 tone port. Last one looks like a my first sony or fisher price product though.

I might buy a CHEAP microphone too. There was something called Shure PG58, for about 30 quid. I was interested because it sounds like SM58 and includes a cable. Probably a cheapo version. I am extremely ignorant so I have no idea what I am talking about.

Oh yes... I am going to use these to record stuff on fujitsu siemens amilo laptop, (USB or Firewire) using Cubase SX and Evolution keyboard. Nothing fancy production first so I am not gonna make a serious investment, around £150 for everything.

Anyway, a friend of mine has an USB soundcard. I have no idea which one tho, and I don't know if he likes it. All I know is that he paid 250 euros for it and that's a shitload of money if you ask me. Just to stay on topic.
I think he has some kind of Edirol, and I don't think this guy buys rubbish. He usually orientates real good so he gets a lot for his money.

We've got an M-Audio Firewire SOLO and it does the job rather well.

I got one yesterday. it kicks ass and is very easy to use. i just connect it plug my bass in and plug my amp into the headphone jack. ableton live comes free with it and you also get a free 6 month subscription to rolling stone (not that i read it ) but its awesome

It looks like my first sony toy but it might be really easy to use compared to cubase own guitar fx.

I've got the M-Audio Audiophile USB, it works decently for me so far. I'll be running a mixer to it, as per Dev's instructions on setting up something small and decent in the house.

M-Audio is a pretty solid brand, from personal experience. I use the FW-410 (it's FireWire, not USB) so I don't know if that'd be an option for you. But it's a great little card. Dual Mic/Guitar inputs on the front, stereo line in on the back, SPDIF and TOSLINK connectivity, and a silly number of outputs should you choose to do surround mixing....can't say I've utilised that myself yet! If FireWire was an option, I'd strongly reccomend this card. Otherwise, you're probably pretty safe with anything else so long as it's ASIO compliant. My friend has the Fast Track, and while it lacks connectivity (no MIDI input, for example) it still offers low latency audio at a ridiculously cheap price. If you're using an external guitar modeller in conjunction - I use the XT Pro - then you're totally set!

Ok then I bought the UX1 Toneport.

but the box didnt include software or manual, minor fuckup, got to go back to whine at the shop this evening.

I managed to download the gearbox (whatwasit) software from line6 website and installed those but I dont have ableton yet.

I played around with the presets and didn't spot any latency and presets were inspiring and pretty much what I expect line 6.

Sounds good and clean and I was surprised to find out there were no problems with static which I used to have when playing around electronic stuff like monitors or tv.

This far I am impressed and I can not believe there could be something else on market that would include so much features for the price.

If I am right now how this works I reckon you can not add any line6 modelling after audio track is recorded?

For Miking, try out a Shure SM57 (for instruments) or a SM58 (Vox).

Try downloading "plug-ins", they can give you lots of cool effects when using certain music software i.e. cubase etc.

I am gonna get started on ableton now and borrow my neighbours sm58 when i wanna dick around with vox.

That's about as off topic as it gets

Dont get a tone port, they are terrible. They are marketed for ease of use for beginners, once you muck around with ti for a while and hear a Focusright Saffire or an Edirol UA 25 you will be pissed off. And get an SM 57 or 58 over a PG, the cost difference is pretty insiginificant and quality difference is huge.
I own and Edirol UA 25, really good for the money
