Well, either Dev or Enya.

They both have crystal clear vocal sounds, yes I know its mostly because they can sing really well (I cant) but I was wondering, is there a cubase LE plug-in effect that can replicate this (or something similar). Failing that, is there a vocal effects preocessor out there that can do something that sounds really nice and clean (cant afford a eventide etc)

Use a very expensive mic and a very expensive preamp. You will want to hook up a Neuman mic or something similar; a really lush ass tube condensor. I believe Devin uses Focusrite pres, I think he mentioned them when last he did a gear expose on here.

As for effects processors, I wouldn't get too concerned about them. Devin does use reverb and delay on his vocals but what is more important is getting a really good arrangement going because Devin tracks up to thirty vocal parts per song most of the time and when you've got that many going the most important thing to worry about is EQ.

You are going to need to EQ the fuck out of all of the vocals to make sure the frequencies don't stack up unnaturally or clutter the mix. You'll notice that Devin masses of backup vocals don't take up much of the frequency range and don't stand out too much. They seem to just blend in nicely and sit there filling in the backgrounds without stepping on the lead vocal.

Note also how much doubling Devin does. There are few Devin lead vocal parts that aren't double or triple tracked. This helps the overall power and adds extra decibels to make the part more clear in the mix. Again, good EQing is very necessary and a subtle approach to delay and reverb.

Don't put too much of that shit on there because when you combine it with the multitude of other vocals in the mix all of the washy sound will make it one big mess. You need clarity when dealing with this much audio; Björk's producer Andrew Spike Stent says that he doesn't use reverb at all because of this tendency - he just uses delays.

Great advice, Greg; I've been messing around with delays where I'd normally use reverb quite a bit lately, and find it really keeps everything from getting lost in mud. A bit of tape delay behind a vocal both creates ambiance and brings it out front, rather than pushing it back like reverb does. And I agree on the importance of careful EQ, both on vocals and on any mix element. There's usually some drastic cuts that need to be made, and while this can make a tracj sound extremely weird when solo'd, it's the context of the mix that is important.
I don't think you really need to break the bank on a mic/pre combo to get great results, though; there is a lot of junk on the shelves that the Huge Music Store sales reps are paid to push on you, but a bit of searching and a LOT of testing can yield some great inexpensive gear. The Audio Technica 4047 comes to mind; it's less than $500 and can easily go head to head with most high-end vintage-styled mics. There's some pretty nice single-channel pre's out there in the $500-$1k range, also (the GT Brick, for example- a big ugly shoebox that sounds like it should cost three or four times what it does). Of course, most of the stuff in this pricerange is indeed crap (like the recent flood of 'me too' Chinese mics, and budget "Tube" preamps that pretty much have a tube in them just for show, i.e, the "starved plate" design), but there are some diamonds in the rough.
Of course, a Neumann mic and a Focusrite pre (something from the Red range, of course- not the somewhat shoddy Platinum range) wouldn't hurt.

Yeah, you can definitely do some good stuff with less expensive gear. It's all down to how you use it. The thing is though, the more expensive something is, generally it is made with better components and will sound naturally wonderful without having to fuck around too much. The joy of working with great gear is knowing that you can plug straight in and not frig around with it to get the optimum.

I've been a musician for ten years, a producer for around two and insanely obsessed with music for most of my life. I also worked in a music store for two years and have been working with studio gear for ages on all manner of projects even before I was a producer. For examples of some of my stuff check out http://www.soundclick.com/gregreason but I still have to update that because everything up there is six months old as a minimum, some of it is years old. I meant to update it last week but uni has been very busy.
