Anneke is coming to Vancouver, we are doing a cover of Hyperdrive on Addicted, as well as lots of duo vox. I LOVE her voice, strong and pitch is great. Shes my age and has a kid too.

Mark Cimino is my good friend of 15 years from New York...we were roommates in LA during Vai, he was Vai's assistant at the time. He's a walking party and great guitarist.

I'm playing guitar...of course! :)

Super high tech production, with a HEAVY groove factor. RVP is murdering the kit...the guys an animal in the best way.

Beav is one of my best bros and been support to me for years, so him on bass makes a lot of sense.

Randy Staub is mixing 3 songs, Mike Fraser is mixing a two, and I'm mixing the rest.

It's VERY HIGH ENERGY and a ton of fun. An intense, powerful clean trip.

We track it in 2 weeks.

Peace!

Words cannot describe how absolutely overwhelmed i am about this album, having taken a while to get used to Ki (now i love it) thiis sounds SO awesome im shaking just imagining what its gonna sound like!! Bring it on Dev!

I heard Annekes version of Hyperdrive and wanted to do a new female version of it for the album, something about it...I had a dream the other night that I was playing the song, and when I went to the mic, it was her voice. I'm just going to go with it.

I like the male / female vocal thing, but SERIOUS vocals, I'm thinking that Addicted might be the best use of my old voice yet...and to have that juxtaposed by a kick ass female vocalist is suh-weeeet! (am I cool for saying that? ...how about 'mint' ?)

Addicted is like dtb with adult lyrics but it's much heavier actually...

Dev, when you say your "old voice" do you mean the sort of super awesome melodic bits that featured in Ocean Machine like the "ON MY WAY PASS IT ON" sort of thing?? Or more like the vocals from Synchestra?? I hope its the Ocean Machine type singing, it sounds like you strech your voice to the very limits but it sounds so incredible, my all time best vocals EVER though is the "Oh, we know, and we're feeling so much better than before..." from infinity. 11 years on that STILL gives my chills.

I never thought of that, I just assumed it was a turn of phrase. Still, I may have read it wrong myself. Also, I am rather interested on how this "Hyperdrive" cover will work out with two singers, although the version I imagine is rather good already. Here's hoping for some Plant/Denny trade-offs.

And I can't for the life of me work out how one would "turn a phrase" when talking about common colloquialisms. Maybe when debating one might be able to turn the phrase of the argument of another, but still...

Sorry, by 'old voice' I mean it in the self-depreciating 'I'm an old fart' kind of way...

dag-gum-it...

Dev, when you play live again, are you planning to just play a set of new stuff, or do you feel you might mix in a bit of old stuff too? Either's good...but I'd give a bollock to see you play Stagnant. Just so you know, like...

Hmmm...tempting proposition...could I get half as a downpayment?

On second thought, half is fine, then I'd have a full set!

Hi devin !

One question about the addicted concept.
I heard in a web interview, that you wanted to reccord an album only with big hits for the airwaves.

But do you plan just to release the CD and that's it ?
Or do you really aim to fix up your sink, build a swimming pool and crank up the cash register ?

Well, i'm cool with that, because if you do so... well it will means a lot to me, I mean about the (shitty) music industry.

Also, I think nickeback start to become famous with the hit from the spiderman soundtrack, the song called "Hero".
A typical rock ballade for girls...
Is there going to have one song like this on Addicted ?

Steph.

Yeah, that was the dillema at first, 'lets make a record of hits that sells so I can continue doing freak music'...honestly, that was the original intention...in a way to take a swing at the industry in an ironic sense.

It didn't work out that way though...it ended up a bunch of bored 'pop' songs. it turned into a kick ass HEAVY rock record...yes, there's choruses like slow me down and stagnant, but I was getting bored writing to make an ironic point, so I just started writing based on it being summer and me being happy, and the record has ended up a high energy stomper...

I think if I had tried to write a straight up pop record, #1, no one who actually likes that shit would have cared...and #2, supporters of what I do would be offended by it.

So I just wrote based on a liberated headspace, and made music that is great for summer, and parties. The recession sucks for everyone, and during times of stress, the LAST thing I want to hear is some miserable sad music or technical death metal. Give me something that sounds awesome with a good beat, make it heavy...and leave the 'metaphoric messages' to those still doing acid.

I don't know man, what can I say about Addicted? ...it makes me drive fast.

i guess the 1k preorders of Ki in less than two weeks (or am i wrong in the numbers here?) is pretty much proof that you can just do things freely and honestly, and still get good response from the public ;)
