So I'm getting one for rehearsals running in front of a power amp and cab. Just for ease of setup in a smaller space.

Anyone know anything about it that could help? tips etc?

Seems like it could be a cool thing to get into.

I've been using one for almost a year now, so if you have any specific questions. ask away.

One thing to note is that the software editor available in beta from http://fractalaudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=27 is still pretty beta and can crash a lot, and it can be pretty picky on the midi interface used to connect to the axe-fx (all midi, no usb :( )
I can send you a ton of cab sim files, (even some patches to get you started if you want) which are a lot better for recording than the built in ones IMO. but since you are going to be running through a power amp and cab, that might not be so necessary. Having said that some people have had some good results even keeping the power amp sim of the unit turned on when running through an external power amp, as well as the cab sims in some cases.
The editor also has a connection to the axexchange site, where anyone can put their patches up and you can very easily download them and try out the vast number of user created patches and cab sims.

Make sure to check out the awesome wiki site http://axefxwiki.guitarlogic.org/index. ... =Main_Page

the forums are really good too, good and knowledgeable people http://fractalaudio.com/forum

It's an insane unit, so many options. the quality of the effects is amazing, I think you will like it. Gonna take you a couple of hours to get a sound you will like though.

no worries!
When are you receiving yours? are you giddy like a little kid? :)

also check this, a side-by-side comparison of a 5150 amp and the 5150 sim in the axe-fx, the real one using an ENGLXXL 412 cab and the axe-fx using a cab sim made from that same cabinet.

I wouldn't be surprised if that ends up replacing your live rig... :D
The AxeFX stuff has intrigued me for a long time...I'm not one to hate on modelers as it is, but this thing has some sick fucking tones in it. I love this guy's tone.

I hear its supposed to seem a bit daunting at first, but once you get into it a bit, it gets easy. There's tons of stuff on the Axe-FX on different forums. I'll see if I can dig up some Harmony Central stuff for you.

Devin...please let us know how it works for you. From what Mosh has said, it sounds yummy. It's not too shabby in the looks department either. :D

Wow, that sounds surprisingly good. I think the naysayers who believe that digital modelling is and always will be awful should have a look at that :D

shit, sounds great!

So I've got 2 really nice PA speakers and a good solid state power amp...would that be a good way to monitor? Plus a direct to FOH? ...or tube power into 4x12's

If I wanted to split the signal to my GP100, would I use the fx loop? or split the signal with an AB?

There's my questions...gonna start tweaking this week.

I think solid state is probably the best for digital modeling. Tube has shown to have its advantages though (the Spider Valve amps from Line 6)

I just think solid state is more reliable for digital modeling.

It really just depends on what sound you want to use. Try it through the SS poweramp, but you could also try slaving it through one of your tube amp's power amps, but then again, that's more stuff to set up..kinda. Are you using the GP100 for effects only?

signal splitting is really easy, there is a tutorial on the axe wiki site. You can get split outputs from the back, or even a dry signal direct out along with the processed one.

I've been noodling on an Axe-FX Ultra for almost a year now.

In terms of signal routing/splitting/whatever, there are a lot of possibilities. Although a little boring, reading through the manual is a good way to get a few of the basic ideas down and from there it's very open to intuitive exploration and tweaking. In terms of sound quality, I consider two different factors with the unit. On one side it's effects and general waveform manipulation/etc are somewhat scarily precise and as a result are very clean. In terms of it's 'modelling' of amp types and such, and replication of the 'valve' sound, I think it exceeds in closely replicating the 'feel' of playing a valve amp, the way valves act and sound, but I still think it misses out on the 'warmth' a valve amplifier has. I use mine either on it's own (I'm designing my own valve poweramp for it with integrated valve DI preamps, just to warm up the signal a little when I decide to go the DI to FOH route) or in the loop of my Diezel VH4 and well...I dont see much need for any other equipment. I'm still awaiting a MIDI footswitch but i'm very eagerly awaiting getting into playing with the looper and tweaking even crazier sounds from it to get into solo ambient/drone stuff live.

Great piece of gear, very cool you've decided to get one Devin. Don't be surprised if you end up using it more and more as you unearth more fun things to do with it. I often cure boredom with a round of 'lets see what weird noises I can make with this thing today'.

I actually recommend hovering over to the Fractal Audio forums and getting active on there if you ever have in depth questions about the unit. The crowd there are righteously helpful when it comes to anything about the device.

greetings humans,

I use mine in a mesa 4x12 cab via a mesa 2:90 power amp and it sounds great! (at least I love it)

i'm sure you'll end up using it as your main rig soon enough... fx are eventide grade and amp sims are really super,

for direct recording, I just go strait into a usb device to the pc into sonar...

the routing option are realy impressive... much more fun to play with than anything else i've tried...

anyway,

welcome into the coolaid train Mr. Townsend,

take a seat and enjoy your ride!

if you have any querrys about the axe-fx, just ask or go to the forum where people are realy nice.

Holy Crap!
I picked my Ultra up 3months ago and I'm amazed and inspired by it daily!
And I can move my own crap now too, gone are the two 20 space racks.
It's easy to get lost in it so, as everyone else said, the Axe-Fx forum is the place for help.

Can't wait to hear what you squeeze out of it!
