So I've got 2 really nice PA speakers and a good solid state power amp...would that be a good way to monitor? Plus a direct to FOH? ...or tube power into 4x12's

If I wanted to split the signal to my GP100, would I use the fx loop? or split the signal with an AB?

There's my questions...gonna start tweaking this week.

GP100? As in the old Roland GP100 modeler?

no worries!
When are you receiving yours? are you giddy like a little kid? :)

also check this, a side-by-side comparison of a 5150 amp and the 5150 sim in the axe-fx, the real one using an ENGLXXL 412 cab and the axe-fx using a cab sim made from that same cabinet.

I'd say the second is the Axe. Amirite?

Yep, you're right. Did you hear it immediately, or did it take some time? ;) I did it in about thirty minutes so I think it's close enough.

Yay, first post! I'm here because I heard of the Axe-FX purchase, offering some help in the matter, and just reading up. This seems like a very nice forum.

I'll do a "newbie presentation" right away.

Regarding the clips, there's something 'extra' and sort of droning in the sound of the Axe that wasn't there in the real amp. I tried the Ultra for a week thinking it could replace my mic'd amp but I liked the amp better. That being said, I'm thinking of doing that again since I'm moving somewhere I won't have the luxury of mic'ing an amp without angering the neighbors.

The effects are great and the amount of adjustable parameters is insane. Routing options are really cool. Ambient sounds can be amazing.

As for the amplification issue, I did try it through a junky yamaha PA and it wasn't all that great sounding as could be expected. I should have tweaked it more I suppose but when tweaking takes navigating through a bunch of menus, it loses its charm. I downloaded the software editor and it looks pretty nice so far.

That was my experience. Maybe I just don't like change and unfortunately I can't afford both right now.

Hahaha, where there's Axe-FX, there's HRI guys.

I'm sure Dev will come up with some killer tones with this once he gets his hands dirty with it.

Hi!

I use this unit primarily for live situations.
I would not replace all my real tube amps with it, but it´s great for recording and effects and you can use/abuse it more ways you can think of.

The way i use it live is as follows:

I have 2 completely different sounds going out from the unit.
One goes out from the line outs, and the other goes out from fx-out

LINE OUT line1 out has all the amp simulations and effects on. It´s a studio quality sound made with our engineer.
That sound goes straight to the soundboard.

FX SEND The other sound only has a different pre-amp simulation on, and pretty much the same effects and it goes straight to the fx return of whatever head i´m using.

This is how i´m always playing a studio quality sound to the PA in stereo, but i get the natural feedback from the stack that´s onstage.
I can use the head only for my stage monitoring, and the volume tweaking won´t disturb my sounguy or the audience.
(I´m talking about playing big festival stages here..)

Couple times on a festival the head (5150 and Mesa rectifier) has blown up, but no one in the crowd noticed, since i was going to the PA all the time from my AXE FX.
If Axe Fx blows up, i´ll just hook my cable to the head. It hasn´t blown up...yet.

I tried using it with poweramps, but i must say that it´s better on it´s own.
That´s why i use it live as i do.

I'll just add that I recommend the latest 8.02 firmware, it's opened up my sound and my patches sound better. It also seems that the amps can be tweaked in a more traditional fashion with expected results.

Also I've had better sounds running FRFR vs a poweramp/guitarcab but your mileage may vary.

So, Devin, have you got to play around with an Axe-Fx yet?

ok i been reading this with great interest, but have come to the conclusion that the axe-fx is way outta my price range, if i was doing shows and doing real full blown recordings that people over the world would hear i would buy one but im only gonna be using it for personal use and recordings with my band that will just end up in my libary and only friends would hear.

so i went on a hunt to look for something simular and found the Boss GP-PRO, at the moment i have Line6POD the old version. is good but recordings arent too crash hot with it.

as i dont do live shows anymore i will be using the Boss GP-PRO for recording. please give feedback on the unit or anything that someone has used that is simular.

Im also looking at a new amp to get, dont think the quad stacks would suit me but need something that will still give out some punch.

Cheers.
