And he also did Aliens and The Abyss. The only bad film he's ever done is Piranha 2. Maybe Titanic.

With Avatar, I liked it, but can understand the dissension people feel with it. For 8 years or more he promised something wonderful and original. What we got was Dances With Wolves meets Ferngully in space. Still, there's no denying it's a visual breakthrough. It's probably the only film I've seen in 3D theatrically that made me appreciate the medium. Mind you, I saw it in IMAX 3D, so that helped. Not a bad film, but doesn't really deserve the tagline "the greatest adventure of all time".

Valid point, but still... Avatar. Also, you should listen to Titanic with his commentary on it. Shit is the most hilarious thing ever, the guy is SO pretentious, but I guess with 2 of the most grossing movies ever he has somewhat of a place to be. "Yeah, this Picasso painting didn't really look right for the scene, so I just repainted it myself."

I half kid about how much I hate him, I realize he's made some good flicks. I guess my main complaint against him is his merits as a writer-- dear god almighty, man. After seeing Titanic (in 3D!) with the girlfriend last week (got dragged) I really want to make a drinking game out of every time Rose says Jack. You'd be puking half way through the movie.

With that being said, he has a good "vision for visuals" if that makes sense. Guy should either leave the writing to someone else or just check himself into the special effects department.

Now with Baz Luhrmann, I would not be half kidding about how much I hate him. Even though he gets one freebie, Romeo and Juliet...

I really wanted to hate Avatar, seriously. And I still really don't like the design of the Aliens. They look like giant smurf cats. And I don't appreciate the cheese in the movie too much. And yeah, maybe Avatar represents everything that's wrong with Hollywood nowadays.
But I happened to catch it on TV not long ago and really enjoyed it actually. Beautiful world, amazing visuals, great action. I don't always have to be challenged and mindblown by a movie. I don't think there's anything wrong with watching a movie now and then just to be entertained...you know, to have some 'fun'. And I can't say I care that Avatar is a lot like Dances with Wolves and Pocahontas because both movies are mindchrushingly boring and I don't mind seeing a copy of something shitty that turns it into something good and entertaining. And let's be honest, there's worse out there. I watched parts of 'Percy Jackson' yesterday on TV. Now that one sucks filthy hobo balls. But that is just my opinion...

my most recent "purchases" that I didn't actually spend any money on because I had gift certificates are:
Red State limited Steelbook edition Blu-ray
O Brother, where art thou? Blu-ray (holy fuck does it look awesome)
Four Rooms Blu-ray

I still think Avatar is visually beautiful to watch. I can't fault it for that.

(... and since somebody mentioned Baz... I still love Moulin Rouge too .. it's like an old 'Carry On' film, for those of you who know those, that's also a musical.)

My arch nemesis is Nicolas Winding Refn.

I liked Bronson, but seriously fuck this guy and his pompous cinema student bullshit that he puts in his films in place of any substance.
