Aaaaaaaaaah I just wrote the most awesome review of this disc EVER and then my connection died as I was posting it...dont you just hate it when that happens?!?!?
ANYWAY! I got the disc just before I went home for christmas. Heard it 3 times so far:
1st Listen: Listened to it while I was packing my bags for christmas. It didnt really sink in, but it was very interesting ambience. You can kind of tune in and out of it if you are doing something else at the same time. Might make good ironing music!
2nd Listen: Was in the back seat of my friends Celicia (car) with 2 other friends on christmas eve. Was very 'merry'. We drove to the middle of nowhere in the countryside with a good view of the full moon. The music took me to a strange place, the sounds echoing around the inside of the car was something quite fantastic. By the end of it I was nearly too scared to leave the car and step outside. Very creepy stuff.
3rd Listen: I knew it would make me lose my mind, but I did it anyway. Later the same night I walked home while listening to the disc with headphones. It was dark, freezing, with a full moon and so I was very scared. Infact, given my state of sobriety, I probably shouldnt have done that walk...but it was magnificent. It was hard to tell what sounds were real and what werent. I swear I could hear the disc even when it had ended. Oh. My. God. My mind was numb when I finally got home.
Overall, this disc is dark and subversive. It has a kind of strange intensity, the sounds are strong and they swell and fade. It really is 'heavy metal ambience', it gives me the same feeling that I get when I listen to City. It just does it in a totally different way. It may not do this to everyone however. This album is the soundtrack to another world, to a nightmare, a dark and unusual corner of your mind perhaps.
I would say dont buy this disc if you arent a fan of all things a little bit psychedelic. It really isnt for everyone. If you only have metal or rock in your CD collection it is quite likely you wont be interested by this.
Also, I think it should be highlighted that regardless of what you think of this music, it is quite special that Devin is able to release it. If he didnt have his own record label I think he may struggle to find a place to put these kind of sounds, but I am glad that he has somewhere. I have a lot of respect for him for putting this thing out, knowing that it is going to upset some people. He's doing exactly what he wants to do, not what he wants us to do. And thats awesome.
