Aaaaaaaaaah I just wrote the most awesome review of this disc EVER and then my connection died as I was posting it...dont you just hate it when that happens?!?!?

ANYWAY! I got the disc just before I went home for christmas. Heard it 3 times so far:

1st Listen: Listened to it while I was packing my bags for christmas. It didnt really sink in, but it was very interesting ambience. You can kind of tune in and out of it if you are doing something else at the same time. Might make good ironing music!

2nd Listen: Was in the back seat of my friends Celicia (car) with 2 other friends on christmas eve. Was very 'merry'. We drove to the middle of nowhere in the countryside with a good view of the full moon. The music took me to a strange place, the sounds echoing around the inside of the car was something quite fantastic. By the end of it I was nearly too scared to leave the car and step outside. Very creepy stuff.

3rd Listen: I knew it would make me lose my mind, but I did it anyway. Later the same night I walked home while listening to the disc with headphones. It was dark, freezing, with a full moon and so I was very scared. Infact, given my state of sobriety, I probably shouldnt have done that walk...but it was magnificent. It was hard to tell what sounds were real and what werent. I swear I could hear the disc even when it had ended. Oh. My. God. My mind was numb when I finally got home.

Overall, this disc is dark and subversive. It has a kind of strange intensity, the sounds are strong and they swell and fade. It really is 'heavy metal ambience', it gives me the same feeling that I get when I listen to City. It just does it in a totally different way. It may not do this to everyone however. This album is the soundtrack to another world, to a nightmare, a dark and unusual corner of your mind perhaps.

I would say dont buy this disc if you arent a fan of all things a little bit psychedelic. It really isnt for everyone. If you only have metal or rock in your CD collection it is quite likely you wont be interested by this.

Also, I think it should be highlighted that regardless of what you think of this music, it is quite special that Devin is able to release it. If he didnt have his own record label I think he may struggle to find a place to put these kind of sounds, but I am glad that he has somewhere. I have a lot of respect for him for putting this thing out, knowing that it is going to upset some people. He's doing exactly what he wants to do, not what he wants us to do. And thats awesome.

A few questions:
1. Am I the only one who thinks some of the vocals remind of Funktard?
2. Am I the only one who can't find the song names?

1. I have no idea of what "Funktard" is... Sorry!
2. You're not the only one. I think that Devlab's tracks have no name.

Yes! The vocals DO remind me of Funktard aswell. (Funktard being the 'Boogy Woogie' video posted by 7lights on the Evenlight site).

And the tracks have no names. I think that makes sense really, as they arent songs and so giving them titles would have little meaning. Or something.

Am I really the only one here that thinks (and says) that this album is plain crap?

I'm afraid you all would still cheer if Devin records farts and sells it. I can imagine you all saying "very interesting", "impressive", "what a great trip", "mindblowing" etc.

Let's face it: This album is not music - it's crap.

Let's face it, artistic expression can't be crap if it moves people and people enjoy it.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is crap, it just means you don't like it

Hmm interesting opinions...

It seems devlab is either a love it or hate it album. But proclaiming it it crap its a bit harsh.
Its different and i like it for that. I think that it is a bold album because alot of people won't like it, but i think that it works as a piece of comtempary music.

As for an album of dev farting? No thanks! Rectal Soundscaped are a bit "samey"

Pfft. Farting ould be a pretty neat idea. The black metal dude Khold had a few tracks like "Khold takes a piss" (2 minutes long) and "Khold pukes" on an album.

Farting on CD...ah, you're thinking of Bile's "I Reject" (Mortal Kombat soundtrack)...

Geez, I just love it when people say that.

Here's what I say: FUCK YOU.

People say the same thing about Mike Patton: "He could just fart into a mic and people would calll it brilliant." Well, guess what? Neither Devin nor Patton has ever released an album of recorded farts, so until they do such speculation is just BULLSHIT.

I haven't even heard Devlab, but consider this; Devin never claimed that it would be an album of 'music'. He also warned everyone that they may not like it. So for you to come out and say "What the hell is this? This isn't even music!" is kind of missing the point. If you don't like it, fine, I can live with that. But don't insult the rest of us who can appreciate artistic expression in unusual forms by suggesting that we'll happily swallow any old crap that is shoved down our throats. Fool.

You are right Mr DancesWithChickens, but please relax.

We are allowed to think that something is crap, and we are allowed to say so if we like. I do agree with you though that it is a bit insulting to say that just because we are fans we will listen to anything and proclaim it as great.

Truth is that this album is the most challenging thing Dev has released. He knew it would be and even said so, and so if you dont agree with what he himself has said that you really are missing the point, because Dev has made it quite clear.

I think it is great, but at the same time I can easily see why somebody else would be really, really dissapointed by it. It is totally unlike anything else he has released. I am interested in this kind of music but I know that it is not for everyone.

Please everyone, just chill out...if you dont like it, that is absolutely fine!!! It is just one album in a very awesome discography, there is plenty other music to choose from that you do like.
