Hi, lads...

Todays' posting starts with a question...
Does anyone know where to order/buy DIGIPACK(!)-CD-trays/holders?
You know...those which get glued to the cartonage. If you're not sure
what I mean just take a look at the limited editions of AE or Terria and
you'll know what I mean. The reason for my question is simple.
I can't afford to have "Terraformer" pressed, labeled and packed once
it'll be finished, so I decided to create my own digipack and to build
them piece by piece in homework. Same with the booklet. This means
lotsa work, but hell...I just don't have the money to have my baby
massproduced. And even if I had the money...I won't risk to have
500 to 1000 units produced of which I'll sell about 12 or so...
Anyway...I'm sure the self/home-made package and design will turn
out nice and allow me to "sell" the big version fair-priced.
Again...I DON'T WANNA MAKE ANY MONEY WITH "TERRAFORMER".
I just do this cause I don't want it to be a "cheap" and "listen-to-once"
free download. I want it to have some style, to deliver a message.
I'll price it in a way that'll allow me to compensate my investments
into the material. And that's it...

Oh yeah...I'm talkin' 'bout the big version here...the "Compact"
version will, of course, be available for free via download.
Oh, and don't misunderstand the excerpt I already released as
the final "Compact" version, even if it's titled the same.
That was just a test recording, using various rifs and parts from
"Terraformer". The "Compact" version will be an EP-version of
the whole thing, about half as long, and it won't go as "deep" as
the big version will.

The only thing that bothers me is that the disk itself will simply be a
burned one...those fuckers are so much more sensitive than pressed
CDs. Okay, It'll be labeled and all...but it'll be just a "cheap" CD-R... :?

Im not sure about the T-shirt idea yet...I mean...I'd produce them
myself too...So, if you become a "fan" after having listened to
"Terraformer" it would be much cheaper for you to make your own
T-shirt than to have to pay money for a lousy black T-Shirt with a
simple white "Terraformer" logo. It also would become too expensive
to send single shirts. The package and sending would cost more than
the whole thing is worth. And if I would send a T-Shirt with EVERY
"Terraformer"-digipack, I'd have to ask about 20 bucks for the
package....not including sending costs. That's far too much...
I don't want to have to increase the price cause there's a lousy shirt
included that 90% of the people don't give a shit for...or could do
better themselves. This also could hold people from buying the big
version "TF" at all...and I won't risk that.

Okay...that's the plan for now.
Any comments, ideas, critique?

NO comments on my last post?! SHAME ON Y'ALL!

Anyway...it's newstime...this time it ain't nice ones...at least for me...
Originally I had planned to release a first "real" preview song during
this week...you know, a complete arrangement, with vocals and all...
BUT...Yesterday I discovered that one of my monitor speakers is all
fucked up...It's not completely broken...it just sounds shitty...
Guess it's a fuse, poweramp or frequency switch issue...
Today I've sent it in to get an exact diagnosis and to have it fixed...
But as long as it's gone I won't be able to mix things down...GRRR!!!
I KNEW I should have gone for the Mackies in the first place...
Anyway...I'll concentrate on fine-tuning the material for now and
report in from time...I guess I'll get the monitors back in about 2 or 3
weeks...so the odds are quite good that a new release will be done in
about a month...

Hey,

just before your latest post ends up with no replies again, I'm just gonna let you know that the effort and the devotion you put in this project is really outstanding. Did you ever think about how many hours of hard work you've already spent on it? I'm wishing you the best for Terraformer. And if the album turns out as good as I expect it from all I've read so far, then count me in for the digipack

Keep up the good work, man!

fuckin A man! good stuff!

i hadnt checked in for a while and had kinda lost track of how you were getting on. but i must say that i am most impressed!
now here is my two cents so listen up!

i reckon you should keep 'compact' as a song on the album. (as a bonus song maybe?) its a novel idea to use a selection of riffs again in another song. if it fits, then put it in (no sexual connotations  )

i dont have a clue about assembling digipacks. it sounds like it could be a lot of extra bother/hard work compared to getting a cover done for a cd box. try pricing your local printing companies so you know the difference in what they are charging, and to see what youre up against.

as for tshirts, maybe you could sell them separately off your website? i understand how excellent it would be to receive one with the digipack but as a non profit making organisation you really do have an issue with funding (the issue being that you are gonna be out a lot of your own cash)-i aint disrespectin you man, just sayin that to keep your costs down, youll have to buy in bulk... and to buy in bulk costs big... plus theres the storage of the goods too.

im just trying to raise some practical matters that may be helpful (or a major pain in the ass)

but as far as the music is concerned, youre in the zone.

sign me up for whatever your selling..... (again, no sexual connotations  )

all the best and keep 'er metal!!!!!

@ Chris

Thx, lad... :D

For the "time already spent on it"-question:
Well, I can't exactly tell how much time I've already invested...
The project evolved and developed over the years...I had to think
about the projects' realisation, to buy gear and learn how to use it.
I really can't tell...8 to 10 thousand hours maybe...

@ Jon

Yeah, I recently decided to keep "Compact" as a song...
The riffs fit so nicely that it would be a shame NOT to play
them in the "Compact"-order. I myself was astonished that
simply playing riffs from songs all over the album already
makes such a nice song.
It'll be extended a little further, of course...
But it'll definitely be on the album.
I'm not quite sure where to place it though...it would make
a great opener, but also a nice ending of the whole odyssey.

You NAILED it man...It's ME who has to pay for all of this in the
first place...This means that I'll have to invest a good amount
of money (that I don't have) to get out NOTHING in the end...
THATS the main problem. I can't ask money for something
that doesn't even exist at the time it is being ordered.
And even IF people were willing to pay first and recieve then...
How could I expect to get enough orders to give green lights
on mass production...?!

Well, I'll find a solution...or so I HOPE...

I would worry about getting an album done
before you even think about t-shirts...

I wish I COULD... :?
But, as I mentioned before, my monitors
will be gone for a while, cause I had to
send them in, to have them fixed.
And...When I said/wrote that I'll have to pay for all of
thisin the first place, I was referring to the CD-package,
not to T-Shirts...

Sounds like a whole lot of ass-kissing to Devin. Why share all this info with everyone (which sounds cool) and then tell us we may not be able to hear it. That's like setting out a plate of Twinkies in front of a bunch of fat people that haven't eaten in a week!!

Cause of the interest people showed...
I made clear from the beginning what this is all about and that Dev
MIGHT decide to keep it for himself...people kept on asking though...

Right, but regardless of what you said I see no purpose at all in not sharing it with people! I mean, if I write a shitty song I want to show people! I'm like, "Hey, this song sucks, but check it out!" It's just odd to me that you'd put that much work into something—if indeed you have—and then not share it, or just share it with one person, or share half of it and not all of it. It seems rather pointless to me.

So be it then...

Listen lad, it's MY goddamn work, it's MY goddamn time and it's
MY goddamn choice to give it away for free, ask a million bucks
for it or just dump it into the shitter once it's done...it's MINE!
By the way...what is YOUR point? To me it seems just to be an
attempt to provoke me...Trying to prove WHAT? That it's all a hoax?
That I just talk and have nothing at all? Hey, even IF it was this way...
Why should ANYONE care? And what would I have won with it?
Getting laughed at once the hoax would blow up, maybe...but
even then...Would I care? GUESS!
I gave REASONS for my decisions. Take the deal or leave it...
Again, what do I care? Man, this ain't a conspiracy! Geez, If I would
have started a topic called: "Hey, I found the cure to cancer! But
I won't share it!", I would get you. But why do you attack me for
just posting some info about what I've been into for such a long
time now at this forum? Lemme do my job and lemme live my life
and we'd get along fine.
Anyway...I won't spend anymore time to discuss a point that is
clear TO ME...and SHOULD be clear to everyone who has read
this WHOLE topic...

Woooweee! Man, when did I ever mention anything about a conspiracy? I simply asked if you put so much effort into something, why would you not share it? It's a simple question, and where you have given a reason, that reason doesn't make sense to me. It may make sense to you, and that's fine, doesn't mean I can't question the logicality of it all.

It especially doesn't make sense because you're sharing all the details about it with everyone here. I'm not trying to provoke you in any way, the project sounds very cool indeed, I'm just asking simple questions. I think you should calm down a bit.
